KROGER, EDWIN L. “CHIEF” 89. Passed away at home on Nov 15, 2022 with his family by his side. Ed was born on May 13, 1933 in Pleasantville, NJ to the late J. Edward Kroger and Irene Kroger. In 1954, joined the Army and assigned to the 702nd Transportation Group (Railway), in Fort Eustis, Virginia. Edwin moved to Northfield and joined the Northfield Police Department in 1956. In 1970 he was sworn in by Mayor Otto Bruyns as Chief of Police and proudly served as Chief until he retired in 1983. Edwin became Head of Security at the Atlantic County Building on Dolphin Ave. After leaving the County he became Head of Security at the Atlantic City Convention Center (Boardwalk where he finally retired for good. He was a longtime resident of Northfield. In 1993 he married Barbara (his Barbie), and they became inseparable sharing 29 years of countless adventures together. Ed and Barbara lived in Margate, NJ, Winston Salem, NC and finally settled in Mays Landing, NJ at the Fairways where Ed loved watching the golfers and the birds along with spending time with all their neighborhood friends. Ed enjoyed golfing and playing cards with old friends. He and Barb never missed their Sunday breakfast after church at Romanelli’s where they felt right at home. When the Phillies or Eagles played, you could be sure he was watching the games as he was an avid and loyal fan. He enjoyed traveling to see lifelong friends and family. He was loved by all and will forever be known as “Chief.” He was also known as the “Whistler.” Ed was a proud member of the Atlantic County Association of Chiefs of Police and the Atlantic County Retired Police and Firefighters Association. He could still qualify as marksmen with his pistol. Ed took great pride in being both a Veteran and a Police Officer. He was also a Master Mason at the Keystone Belcher Lodge #153 in Linwood, NJ. Ed was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Linwood, NJ. Ed is survived by his loving wife Barbara. His sons Donald Riddle (Ellen), Stephen J. Kroger (Camille), James S. Kroger (Helen), Richard L. Kroger (Victoria), David C. Kroger, Douglas S. Kroger (Alicia), and Barbara’s sons Edward Woltmann (Christine), William Woltmann (Karen) and Robert Woltmann (Wendy), many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Predeceased by his son Edwin M Kroger (Beverley), and daughter Sandra Riddle. At the request of the family, all Services will be private. Internment will be at the Atlantic County Veteran’s Cemetery.
