Obituary Charles R. Gilman of Eagle River passed away on Thursday, December 23, 2021 at the age of 82 at Rennes Health and Rehab Center in Rhinelander, WI. He was born February 12, 1939 in Libertyville, IL. Chuck graduated from Ela Vernon High School in 1957 and attended Lake Forest College. Chuck married Kathy (Selonke) Aug. 13, 1960. After Kathy passed away, he married Marilou (Karst/Pooley) June 14, 1986. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents Russell and Arlene Gilman; first wife, Kathy Gilman; brother-in-law, Larry Perryman; and his son’s special partner, Tracy Pfantz. He is survived by his wife, Marilou; sister, Sharon Perryman; daughter, Beth (Bruce) Jacobson; son, John Gilman; step-daughters Jennifer (Brian) Pooley/DuFresne, and Jessica (Brady) Pooley/Balls. He is further survived by 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Chuck was a huge sports fan. In school he was a three-season athlete. Later, Chuck coached baseball, basketball, soccer, and hockey. After moving here from IL, he skated for the Eagle River Old-Timers league. Chuck was quite involved with the ERRA coaching, volunteering, doing maintenance and changing sets for the Silver Blades Ice Show. Chuck was an automobile mechanic most of his life. He was part owner of Eagle River Firestone for many years. After retiring as a mechanic Chuck worked at Eagle River Auto Parts for several years before becoming a driver for Schilleman Bus Company. Serving his community was important to Chuck. He was a volunteer fire fighter, chief of the fire department, and EMT in Half Day, IL. He continued community service in Eagle River by serving on the Northland Pines School Board from 1999-2005, sitting on the Tri-County Board for Social Services, serving as a member of the Republican Party, and ran for the 34th WI State Assembly District. As per Chuck’s wishes, a private family memorial will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the ERRA Save the Dome campaign. Read more
