Carol Mae (Berkey) Younes Saginaw Twp., Michigan Beloved and devoted wife, mother and grandmother passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at Covenant HealthCare at age 82 years. The daughter of the late Ora and Grace (Hamman) Berkey, Carol was born on September 15, 1940 in Constantine, Michigan. After high school, Carol went to Michigan State University to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work where she met the love her life, Mohsen. They were later married in Egypt in 1971. Carol dedicated her life to helping people meet their basic needs, grow as human beings, and learn to read. For decades as a social worker, she advocated for people to receive all resources available to them, removed barriers to education, and ensured the protection of those needing care. She encouraged her clients to believe in themselves and celebrated their achievements, even small ones, along the way. Always an avid volunteer, Carol spent countless hours organizing and volunteering in a youth literacy program, lending a hand to the ill and elderly, and connecting immigrant community members to resources, easing their transition. She was especially passionate about promoting literacy, because it affects a person’s entire life experience and opens a world of possibilities. Carol took a whole-life approach to mentoring, by instructing her volunteers to first give the children their full attention and let them know they are special, second to make reading fun, and third to build skills. Carol’s jolly demeanor, enthusiasm for giving back to the community, and concerns for others’ well-being were contagious. Carol was a member of the Embroidery Guild of America; president of the Merry Wives Club and State Employees Retirees Association; a home room mother at Hemmeter Elementary School; and an active member of Immanuel Bible Church where she also sang in the choir. Through health challenges Carol experienced in recent years, her trust in God brought her comfort and peace. Her kindness, generosity, and ability to connect with people will always be remembered. Surviving besides her husband Mohsen are two daughters, Mona (Derwin) Munroe-Younis and Amal Younis; one grandson, Sebastian Munroe; one brother, Arthur Berkey; nephews and nieces, Eric, Neal, Scott, Dawn, Tom, Chris, and Lisa; and numerous friends and extended family. Carol was preceded in death by her siblings Barbara Ann Berkey, Reynold (Patricia) Berkey, Aleta Berkey, and Daniel (Carol Ann) Berkey. Funeral Service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 22, 2022 at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Rd., (between Shattuck and McCarty). Pastor Mark Hazen will officiate with interment to follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home where the family will be present on Thursday from 11:00a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Saginaw Rescue Mission (rescuesaginaw.org) or Smile Train (donate.smiletrain.org).
