Obituary A family lost their father and the world lost someone very special on December 20, 2022. Carleton “Chip” Smith passed peacefully with his children by his side in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Chip was a father first, doctor second. He was never hesitant or cautious with his affection, often getting teary eyed at dinner telling his kids how much he loved them. He taught his family to ski, shared with them a love for adventure and the mountains, and showed them how to care for others. His dry humor was prolific; his kids carry that with them today. Born October 13, 1950, Chip grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He followed in his father’s footsteps and went to medical school at Wayne State University training in emergency medicine. He moved to North Carolina for residency in anesthesia at Duke University. His love for the outdoors brought him to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he practiced anesthesiology and raised four kids. The family got a fresh start in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where Chip practiced medicine and lived out the rest of days. Chip lives on through his four kids, Jeff, Scott, Kevin, and Steph, and his sisters, Shirley and Jude. Chip’s life will be celebrated at Zaagman Memorial Chapel in Grand Rapids, Michigan on January 21st at 11am. All are welcome to attend.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Carleton Asa Chip Smith Jr December 20 2022.
