Berwyn L. “Butch” Ekena, 72, of Washington, formerly of Elmwood, passed away at 6:10pm Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. He was born August 21, 1950 in Peoria to Harvey and Pearl Shane Ekena. He married Margaret “Peggy” Bunker in Peoria on September 14, 1974. She survives. Also surviving are two children, Jeffrey (Sara) Ekena, Katie Ekena; four grandchildren, Libby, Carly, Lily, Carter; and one sister, Sharon (Dale) Worley. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jacqueline Slone-Howard; and his brother, Donald Ekena. Butch was a United States Army Veteran. He worked at Caterpillar Inc., retiring after over 30 years of service. He and his wife attended Crossroads United Methodist Church in Washington. Cremation has been accorded. A Memorial Service will be held at 11am Saturday, December 3, 2022 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. Family will receive friends two hours prior to the service from 9 to 11am Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations made to the Washington Community High School Athletics Department (c/o Kim Barth), or Central Intermediate PTO.
