Winifred’s Obituary Winifred Claire (Hawn) Reed, 90, of Smithfield Township, Huntingdon, passed away Thursday evening, June 17, 2021, at UPMC Altoona. Born January 18, 1931 in Pennsylvania Furnace, Ferguson Township, Centre County, she was a daughter of the late G. Harold and Madeline (Gilliland) Hawn. At the age of five months she moved with her parents to a farm in West Township, rural Petersburg, where she resided until moving to Huntingdon in her early 20’s. She graduated from Juniata Valley High School, Alexandria, with the first class in 1948, and attended Juniata College, Huntingdon, for two years. She began employment with the Joseph F. Biddle Publishing Co. (“The Daily News”) June 5, 1950, as proofreader. The following September, she assumed the job of social editor, continuing that position until her marriage in 1984. Two and one-half years later, she returned to The Daily News as a proofreader, retiring at the age of 72. She was married April 28, 1984 to Paul E. Reed of New Cumberland, formerly of Rock Spring, in a ceremony performed in the First United Methodist Church of Huntingdon, officiated by the Rev. William M. Brown. Mr. Reed preceded her in death on February 18, 2014. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her only sister, Edna H. Brenneman of Huntingdon, on April 15, 2020. During her working career, she held membership in the Pennsylvania Women’s Press Association and served two terms as Central District Director. In addition to her membership in the First United Methodist Church, she held memberships in the former Wesleyan Service Guild, in the former Women’s Society of Christian Service and in the United Methodist Women. For 60 years, she sang in church choirs, starting as an early teen in the Manor Hill Methodist Church (now Faith United Methodist), the first church she joined, then at Trinity United Methodist Church in New Cumberland and then returned to the Chancel Choir at First United Methodist Church, where she sang a total of 50 years. She also formerly taught sixth graders in Sunday school. While working, she did publicity for many organizations. She was on the board of the Huntingdon Chapter of the American Red Cross for 18 years, did publicity for the American Cancer Society, belonged to the former Huntingdon Music Club, was publicity chairman and on the board of the Women’s Auxiliary of J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital and held membership in the American Diabetes Association for many years. In addition, she was a member and a former officer of the Juniata Valley High School Alumni Association and served as chairman of the class of 1948 reunion committee. She enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, reading, and collecting porcelain dolls. Dear to her heart were her family members, her host of cousins and friends. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 26, 2021, at the First United Methodist Church, 427 Mifflin St., Huntingdon, with the Rev. Dr. Joey A. Fleck and the Rev. G. Edward “Ted” Corcelius officiating. Private interment will be in the Mooresville Cemetery, West Township, Petersburg.
