Robert’s Obituary Robert “Bob” Evan Forbes was born January 1, 1941 in Torrance California. He was the first one born in the hospital that year, and the local newspaper ran an article about him. He was the only child of Walter Vernon and Cleo Corrine Evans Forbes. His parents divorced when he was young and he lived with his mother, uncle, and grandparents. He graduated from Millikan High School in Long Beach, Ca in 1958. He worked at Procter and Gamble as a Dove Soap inspector while he was attending Long Beach City College. He went on the best blind date ever in 1960 – they went to a dance at the National Guard Armory in Long Beach. They started out as friends and ultimately, he married the catch of his life, Leslie Ann Stickley April 22, 1961 in Compton, California. Bob worked at May Company in Lakewood, California and continued his education. He also worked at Hughes Aircraft as an illustrator until he joined the Long Beach Police Department January 6, 1964. The Forbes bought a house in Long Beach in 1965, a German Shepard, and a car. Then Bob was drafted into the Army 21 December 1965 with only 1 weeks’ notice before he had to report. Bob did basic training at Fort Bliss Texas and he was assigned to the Presidio in San Francisco, CA. About 9 months later he received his orders to go to Vietnam. He served there in Fu Bai as Army Security. The compound often received “incoming” and he served there until the death of his father in September of 1967. He was then released from service and returned to Police duties in Long Beach where he worked and served for 33 years. He attended Pepperdine University while working at the Long Beach Police Department and earned his Master’s Degree. During his law enforcement career, he worked in various details and retired as a Commander with strong ties to the people that he worked with in 1998. The Forbes moved to Westminster, California in 1975 and they raised their daughters, Barbara Susan Forbes Blackburn (Michael) and Wendy Ann Forbes Lemon (Robert) there. In 1996 Bob became a “Pop” when his first grandchild arrived. Bob loved being “Pop” and spending time with his grandkids as much as possible. The Forbes moved to Orange, California in 2001 and lived there until January 2020. In April they moved to Cedar City, Utah with their Daughter Barbara and her family. Bob was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and knew that families can be together forever. Bob loved camping and fishing, and working with his hands. He enjoyed his model train collection and running the trains with his grandkids. He also loved watching and attending Angels Baseball games and he couldn’t leave the game until he’d had a Coke, hot dogs, and ice cream. He enjoyed visiting Disneyland, pin trading, and just being with his family. Bob and Ann have traveled extensively, camping in their 5th wheel for many years. They enjoyed camping in Alaska, Canada, most of the United States, and Bob especially loved Yellowstone National Park, where they went annually. When they couldn’t visit Yellowstone Bob would love to watch Old Faithful on the live webcam and was especially delighted when it would snow there. Bob loved camping and traveling with his grandchildren – Allison and Austin Lemon and David and Steven Blackburn during the summer vacations. He especially loved Christmas, and all the decorating and excitement that goes with it. About 12 years ago Bob was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and passed away May 26, 2020 in Bountiful Utah. While our hearts break at the loss of our husband, father, “Pop”, and friend, we feel blessed that he was able to go back to our Father in Heaven peacefully with family at his bedside. Bob will be buried at Cedar City Cemetery in Utah. While we will always miss him, we know that he is with his family and friends that passed before him, and he no longer has to fight the disease that was so cruel. Bob is survived by his Wife, Leslie Ann Stickley Forbes of Cedar City, Utah Daughters Barbara (Michael) of Cedar City, Utah and Wendy (Robert) of Lakewood, Ca, and his 4 grandchildren: David Forbes Blackburn, Steven Michael Blackburn, Allison Ann Lemon and Austin Robert Lemon. Graveside services will be held on Monday, June 1, 2020 at 11:00 am at Cedar City Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Monday, June 1, 2020 prior to the services from 10-10:45am at Southern Utah Mortuary. Online condolences can be sent to www.sumortuary.com. Read More
