Obituary The memory of a man is shaped by the expressions of his life’s philosophy. The value he placed on family, work and community attest to how well he lived his life. Robert Alexander Maxwell, 76, lived with honor as a gentleman who, in all things, endeavored to be wise, kind, diligent and fair. He passed away peacefully on May 22, 2020 in Petoskey, Michigan. He was born to Betsy Ann (Callender) Maxwell and Earl Alexander Maxwell on May 29, 1943 at Harper Hospital, Detroit, MI. He grew up in Birmingham, MI and attended Seaholm High School. His undergraduate studies were completed at Denison University, Ohio where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Rob graduated from University of Michigan Law School with a Juris Doctor in 1968. Rob served as a prosecuting attorney for the City of Birmingham and spent the rest of his career in private practice. On December 31, 1985, Lynn Andrea Hofley walked down the aisle to become the beloved wife of “this tall, handsome attorney” at Kirk InThe Hills, Presbyterian Church, Bloomfield Hills, MI. Lynn and Rob balanced work with play in the Boyne City area which offered the couple skiing, power boating and sailing on Lake Charlevoix. They eventually made a full-time commitment to northern Michigan and settled in Horton Bay. There, Rob became the official Fourth of July, Horton Bay Parade photographer. His artistry captured the area’s natural beauty. His humor is evidenced in the portraits of the wacky parade entrants. Rob published his work in several volumes and donated his vast collection of photography books to the Boyne Area District Library. He was a trustee of the Charlevoix Area Humane Society and BASES of Charlevoix. Rob was also a member of the Charlevoix Photography Club. Rob Maxwell loved Lynn, his children, his siblings, his dogs, Elvis, Rock ’n Roll, cars, and was an avid motorcycle rider and racer. He was a gentleman, a scholar with a quick wit, a friend. He is survived by: Lynn Maxwell and Tucker, the Ruby Cavalier; Betsy (Chris) McDaniel, daughter; Lauren (Travis) Whelan, daughter; Doug (Micki) Maxwell, brother; Ann Maxwell Ross, sister: Skylar and Lily McDaniel, and McAllister and Lucy Whelan, grandchildren. A celebration of Rob’s life will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorials to the Charlevoix Area Humane Society and BASES of Charlevoix.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Robert Alexander Maxwell May 29 1943 May 22 2020 (age 76).
