Richard A. Markunas, 83, of Old Bridge, passed away on May 7, 2020 at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Old Bridge, NJ. He was born on June 9, 1936 to the late Anthony and Genevieve (Brzozowski) Markunas in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, NY. He was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School and was known as a skillful handball player on the courts of McCarren Park. Richard briefly lived in Long Island, Rahway, and Linden before settling in Old Bridge with his wife and children where he lived the last 54 years. Richard was a veteran having served in the US Navy aboard the USS Boston, achieving the rank of petty officer third class. He was very proud to be both a Shellback and a Blue Nose. He worked as a machinist for Hyatt Bearings, a division of General Motors, in Clark, NJ. He was obedient in the practice of his faith and was a parishioner of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Old Bridge. Richard was lifelong fisherman and loved both salt and freshwater fishing. In his spare time, he enjoyed taking his canoe out on various lakes and shared his pastime with his sons and anyone that would join him. He was a man who was fulfilled by the simple pleasures in life like a good nap or a meal from The Keyport Fishery. He loved to talk and had a knack for engaging his audience with his story telling. In retirement he and his wife enjoyed traveling on vacations and taking cruises. Most of all Richard loved his family and will be dearly missed by them. He was preceded in death by son, James Markunas, and parents Anthony and Genevieve Markunas. Richard is survived by his loving spouse of 58 years Julia Markunas, two sons, David Markunas and wife Irene, Daniel Markunas and wife Ayano; daughter in law Patricia Markunas, and his beloved grandchildren; Jonathan, Jared, Jessica, Melissa, Makito, and Malino. A private visitation was held at Old Bridge Funeral Home, Old Bridge, NJ. A mass and inurnment of his remains at Brigadier General William C.
