Olaf’s Obituary OLAF EMIL GRIMSBO, age 93, of Grand Rapids, MN passed away Saturday, May 23, 2020 at The Emeralds nursing home in Grand Rapids, MN. Olaf was born in 1927 at the family farm north of Palisade, MN to Bendik and Rachel Grimsbo. He attended elementary school in Palisade, MN and high school in Alborn, MN. Olaf later attended school for agriculture and forestry in Grand Rapids, MN. Olaf worked for the U.S. Government in Alaska and also Thule, Greenland. He was a master welder and mechanic. Olaf returned to Minnesota and he was employed with the D.N.R., the Iron Mines, and built houses. Farming followed, and became his main occupation for the rest of his life. Olaf and his brother, Nils Grimsbo, designed a rutabaga seed-planting machine with which they helped the Itasca County Farmers plant rutabagas following World War II. On April 24, 1964, he was united in marriage to Alice Johnson. Olaf and his beloved Alice spent twenty of their retirement winters in southern Texas. Olaf was a long-standing member of Zion Lutheran Church, and supplied his excellent Burbank russet potatoes for many church dinners. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Daniel, Nils, and Peter Grimsbo; sisters, Ann, Olga, Emma, Hilda and Ruth. Olaf is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Alice; three daughters, Joy (Paul) Rittenhouse of Richfield, MN, Janet (Greg) Johnson-Mauriello, Ludlow, VT, and Holly (Chris) Jacobsen of Naperville, IL; two sons, Mark Johnson of Grand Rapids, MN, and Capt. Gerald (Angela) Grimsbo of Hermantown, MN; sister, Clara Pearson and brother, John (Joyce) Grimsbo; grandchildren, Neil, Alice, Leticia, Greta, Heidi, Mara, Erik, Louisa, Taylor, Madison, and Kyleigh; great grandchildren, Max, Hugo, and Katherine; and many nieces and nephews. The family of Olaf Grimsbo wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the nurses and staff at the Emeralds for their loving care that they bestowed upon Olaf and his family. A graveside service will be held Sunday, June 21, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Itasca-Calvary Cemetery, Grand Rapids, MN. Memorials are preferred to Zion Lutheran Church, Camp Hiawatha, or Second Harvest Food Bank. Read More
