Norman’s Obituary Norman “Norm” J. Soyer, age 81, of Glidden, IA, passed away on Friday, May 29, 2020 at Unity Point Hospice in Ft. Dodge, IA, due to complications of Parkinson’s disease. A private funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden with Fr. John Gerald officiating. Casket bearers will be Norm’s family members. A public graveside service will be held at the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden at 11:30 A.M. followed by a luncheon at the Lincoln Club in Glidden. Those in attendance are asked to abide by Covid – 19 social distancing guidelines. Box 23, Glidden, Iowa 51443 Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Norm as he was known to most, was born on December 10, 1938 in Carroll, IA, and was the son of Joseph and Eleanora (Prebeck) Soyer; the oldest of seven children. He attended school at St. Peter and Paul Catholic School until sixth grade when his family moved to a farm south of Gliden. He then attended Glidden Community School graduating with the class of 1956. During his younger years, he was active in the Richland Hot Shots 4-H Club and the Future Farmers of America. On February 15, 1958 he was married to his high school sweetheart Jane Slocum at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Carroll with the temperature being 13 degrees below zero. They then drove his prized 1955 Chevy to the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico for their honeymoon. They moved into their first Glidden home and eventually bought the house across the street. In 1980, they built a new home. All of their homes were within two blocks of each other. Norm worked several jobs including the Glidden Coop Elevator, the Iowa Highway Commission, and he was co-owner of the Glidden Bolt Supply with his brother Larry. Later on he became a salesman for the Garst and Thomas Seed Corn Company which later became the Garst Seed Company. In the 1970’s he started farming which was his passion. Norm loved John Deere equipment and was very meticulous in keeping his machinery in top notch condition. Over the years he was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the RPM Car Club, the Merchants Booster Club, and he was on the original board of the Iowa Corn Processors. He also served on the Carroll County Magistrate Appointing Committee and he was a Glidden City Council man during two separate terms. Norm was an avid New York Yankees and Green Bay Packers Fan. His hobbies included golfing, bowling, participating in car shows, and playing cards. He loved spoiling his children and grandchildren and attending their many activities. Norm is survived by his wife Jane of 62 years of Glidden; his son Scott Soyer of Spencer, IA; his daughter Joni DeVries (Bart) of Des Moines; three grandsons: Alex DeVries (Jami) of Des Moines, Nick DeVries (Becca) of Des Moines, and Ben DeVires of Des Moines; three great-grandchildren: Norah, Ayrton, and Jolene; three sisters: Judy Blessington of Des Moines, Rose Quinlan (Jim Spooner) of Lakeland, FL, and Lynda Humlicek (Tim) of Ames; two brothers: Larry Soyer (Elaine) of Glidden and Tom Soyer (Shelley) of Glidden; a sister-in-law LaVonne Rees of Tacoma, WA, and many nieces and nephews. Norm was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Eleanora Soyer; his in-laws George and Lois Slocum; his brother Lynn Soyer; and his nephews Jeff Soyer and Jessie and Joey Soyer. Read More
