In times of loss, one’s perspective is perched up high where the grander view of life can be truly measured. In times like this, empathy reaches out much further and flows much deeper. My Uncle – Larry Dale Petitt was a man that told stories with passionate expression and his hands helped him talk. I remember that his voice reminded me of my Grandpa Petitt, his Dad. My Grandpa and my uncle would sit around playing their guitars and singing old country songs…and a few old church hymns. My Uncle was just 11 years older than me, so my earliest memory was a mixture of car parts and plenty of cigarettes. My Uncle could work on the old cars and get them to work. I remember he would come in the font door in such a rush it always startled me. Usually he had brought cigarettes for my Grandpa or he would have a grand story in which his expressions and hands assisted. He had fire in his veins at times and would come in cussing someone that had done this or that and my Grandma would try to settle him…sometimes successfully and sometimes not. As anyone who has ever lived and anyone who ever will live…he didn’t always make the right choices. Alcohol, drugs and sometimes fighting were his comforts…and they eventually became his oppressors. Those “comforts” outweighed reason and his creativity in attaining them carried him beyond the law. He did time. However he walked out of prison wiser than he walked in. These past few years living here in Arkansas with us – reshaped his once “gruff”, and “out of control” manner. Family meant more to him, he saw his nieces and nephews and his grand nieces and grand nephews…and they meant something to him. Those he worked with will miss him and his jokes. He had friends at the corner gas station in Bella Vista…they valued his humor and his way of expressively weaving a story. Most of all his family will miss him. Sometimes you could hear him playing Grandpa’s old Gibson and singing. He would sit down, and have dinner with the family and see him warmed by it. His mothers faithful prayers kept him, and God’s Love wasn’t foreign to him. He was no longer the teenager or that 20-something that lived life without care. He knew God had kept him and he was grateful for it. His heart, his way of expressing love, and his view of family significantly changed…and we – his family – are bountifully better for it because we remember him and we always will. His voice will always be heard in the many rooms of our hearts, and our love of him will never fade. Arrangements are by Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory.
