Dorothea’s Obituary Dorothea Gaetz, age 93, passed away peacefully at her Huntersland home on May 27 after a long struggle with colon cancer. Born Dorothea Raeder in 1927 in New Jersey to German immigrant parents, Doris spent her early childhood with her Raeder grandparents in Germany’s Rhineland and didn’t learn English until returning to the States in 1934. Her family resided in East Schodack and she graduated from Columbia High School in 1945. She assisted her parents in their businesses, the Albany Pork Store in Schenectady and the Canterbury House Restaurant in Scotia, and married George Gaetz in 1949. Doris had an abiding love of all animals and served as administrative manager of the Guilderland Animal Hospital for over 20 years, retiring in 1988 and moving to Schoharie County. The caption by Doris’s high school yearbook photo read “There is grace in all her steps; in every gesture dignity,”, a description that remained accurate throughout her life. She will be remembered as a gentle and caring soul with a core of courage and strength, soft spoken but fiercely protective of the people, animals, and land she loved. Over the years she fostered and adopted many rescue cats and several dogs, and owned a small herd of Nubian goats. She cherished the wildlife around her rural home, and took care to preserve their natural habitat. She loved spending time in her kitchen, cooking and baking treats from her her vast cookbook collection and occasionally scoring a blue ribbon at the Sunshine Fair. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, tending her large garden, canning and freezing her home-grown produce, and displaying her fresh flower arrangements throughout the house. Doris was predeceased by her parents, her ex-husband and friend George Gaetz, and her son-in-law Hal Blakely. She is survived by her daughter Linda Blakely, also of Huntersland. Linda wishes to thank the personnel of Bassett Healthcare and Helios Hospice who treated Doris’s declining health with kindness and compassion. As per Doris’s request, there will be no services. Donations may be made in Doris’s memory to the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley, PO Box 40, Howes Cave, NY 12092, or to Helios Hospice, 297 River Street, Oneonta, NY, 13820. The Langan Funeral Home of Schoharie and the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home of Cobleskill are assisting with Doris’ wishes. Read More
