Today we honor the life of Charlotte Cadwell, who passed into Jesus’ arms at her home in Chamberlain on Tuesday, May 12th, 2020. Many people knew her as teacher, friend, musician, or the “Lady from the Marina”. It is impossible to count the number of lives she has touched. We were so fortunate to know her as Mom, Grandma, Aunt, Cousin, and Scotty (as Darrel always called her). She has made her way to rejoin family and fly with the angels in heaven. This is her story. Charlotte Louise Scott was born April 12th, 1928 at Storla, South Dakota to Hanley and Agnes (Thompson) Scott. She attended country school and later graduated from Letcher High School in 1946. She attended Augustana College, graduating with four majors in 1950. She began her teaching career at Mitchell High School for one semester and then transferred to Chamberlain High School where she taught English, Spanish and coached Oral Interpretation. She met her future husband, Darrel Cadwell while teaching in Chamberlain. They were married on November 10th, 1956. Charlotte and Darrel had a passion for baseball, and were instrumental in bringing the Basin League Amateur Baseball teams to the area. They both taught at Chamberlain High School until Darrel retired in 1979 and Charlotte continued until her retirement from school in 1989. Together, they owned C & D Self Service gas station in Oacoma, SD, and later purchased the American Creek Marina in Chamberlain, which they operated for many years. You could always stop by the Marina for her famous caramel rolls or her Sour Cream Raisin or Green Apple pie, always served with a smile. Charlotte served as the organist at Trinity Lutheran Church in Chamberlain for over 50 years, and provided her talents to the local nursing home and countless weddings and funerals in the community. In retirement, she could also be found working at McDonald’s as a greeter, seeing many friends come through who had frequented the Marina. She had a wonderful coffee group there that she treasured deeply. Charlotte was an active 50-year member of PEO Chapter AA and a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Chamberlain. She was loved by many and was a true servant and friend. Those left to treasure her memory are her daughter Kim (Todd) Dougherty of Chamberlain, grandchildren Scott (Michaelah) and great grandson Raiden of Chamberlain, Sean (Brook) of Simpsonville, SC, great grandsons Cameron, Zane, Lyfe, twins Parker and Paxton, and granddaughter Janae Dougherty of Roseville, MN, along with so many nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends from all over the country and the world, all of whom she treasured dearly. Her many coworkers, former students, and friends from the community were all so important in her life. She always made you feel like the important one. Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, husband Darrel, sister LaVera Reeves-Knox, along with very special sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. She inspired us all to be better people. Her favorite saying was “God works in mysterious ways”. Her favorite Bible verse was Jeremiah 29:11- For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. Charlotte lived and walked this life. She was a beautiful person inside and out. She is missed but she has made the journey and is waiting for us to join her. Well done, good and faithful servant!
