December 9 1928 April 18 2020
Robert J. (Bob) Suchy, 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at DayBrook Village Nursing Center in Holyoke. Born December 9, 1928, son of the late John and Ann Suchy, Bob was a lifelong resident of Chicopee. A 1946 graduate of Chicopee High School, he was a member of the Varsity baseball and basketball teams. He continued his studies at Rider College in Lawrenceville, NJ. While at Rider, Bob was invited for a tryout with the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Before assignment, a back injury ended his playing days. Returning home, Bob married Dolores E. Sowa of Holyoke. After briefly living in Holyoke, they returned to Chicopee and started raising a family. Bob worked for the Coca Cola Co, Uniroyal Tire Co. and the former Chrapek Pontiac in Chicopee. There he enjoyed a successful 20-year career. In 1978 he became proprietor and operator of the Y Café, a family business in the Willimansett section of Chicopee, from which he would retire in1995. Bob was a communicant of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr. For years, he coached little league baseball for the Colonels AC and basketball for the St. Stan’s basketball program. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, playing cribbage and rooting for the four professional sports teams in Boston. He especially looked forward to the fall when he and his family would cheer on the Boston College Eagles football team. He attended games in Chestnut Hill for over 30 years. Bob also enjoyed spending time with his wife at the Rhode Island shore and the Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge. In retirement, Bob enjoyed his daily 5-mile morning walk in Szot Park with his friends. His greatest joy though came from watching his grandchildren on the ball field, court, ice rink or golf course. He could always be found sitting in left field or standing against the glass at the ice rink cheering them on. These were truly some of the best times of his life. Bob was predeceased by his brother Max and his sister Stella. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Dolores E. Suchy; two loving sons, Bruce E. Suchy of Enfield, CT and Brian W. Suchy and wife Joyce of Chicopee; five cherished grandchildren, Mark A. Suchy of Newton, David M. Suchy and wife Samantha of Somerville, Carolyn A. Suchy of Los Angeles, CA, Christopher M. Suchy of Enfield, CT and Emma E. Suchy of Longmeadow; and brother-in law, William Sowa, Jr. of So. Hadley. The family would like to thank the staff at DayBrook for the care and kindness given to their Dad and Grandpa. Funeral services and burial in St. Stanislaus Cemetery were private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
