John’s Obituary John Louis “Sonny” Cantone passed away on April 24 at the age of 90 surrounded by his loving family, including his wife of 70 years, Gloria, in Monroe Township, NJ. He was born on Aug. 29, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY, to Vincent and Lucy (Abruzzi) Cantone, and served as older brother to Anthony (Babe). John’s teenage years were spent skipping school and taking the train to Manhattan to see all the great Big Band leaders of the day. He soon became smitten by a girl who lived a few blocks away, using a piece of caramel to seal a love letter to her. He married Gloria Ginetta Morgano on Nov. 12, 1950. The two would spend the next 70 years together. Their life was filled with joy, travels, and, most importantly, love. Shortly after their marriage, John enlisted as a Navy Reservist before being drafted into the Army during the Korean War. He didn’t see any action, but his stories of practical jokes, antics and out of reach bathrooms in Italy were much loved by his family. He was a loving father to his four daughters, teaching them how to box, tie knots and change car “earl,” as well as providing honest advice and opinions whether they asked for it or not. He was a true Jack of all Trades, fixing and repairing anything and everything, and working in a number of fields to support his family. His longest job was as a linotype operator for the New York Daily News and the New York Times for 30 years. John’s whistling was legendary, with a tone that ranged from a low warble to piercingly high, and nothing, not even pleas from his family, could dissuade him from finishing a phrase. He loved Entenmann’s chocolate frosted donuts, bracioles, Nathan’s hot dogs and French toast from Johnny G’s in Florida (there really wasn’t much food John didn’t like). Besides whistling and eating, he loved to play cards, especially Rummy, and John was at his happiest when he was doing all three. John loved to tell stories and there will be many stories told about him. He will be remembered as someone who loved his family no matter what, who told jokes and who laughed and smiled. And we know that we’ll see John again soon in Kalamazoo. John was preceded in death by his mother, father and brother Anthnoy. Surviving are his wife Gloria, daughters Maria Heinz (Max), Christina McKay (Kevin), Lisa Magro (Charlie), and Andrea Marzano (Thomas); seven grandchildren Alicia Manguso (Dave), Matthew Manguso (Ali), Zachary, Samantha, Ryan and Jesse Belfer; and Emilie Marzano; and two great grandchildren Siena and Bryce Manguso Grosshandler. A ceremony will be held privately with family. In lieu of donations, the family requests you make a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org. Read More
