Tribute Mr. Amiel McKay, 61, of Lumberton passed away February 7, 2020 at Southeastern Health. Mr. Amiel McKay, departed this life early on Friday, February 7, 2020. Amiel was born on June 1, 1958 in Baltimore, MD to John McKay and Zula Scott McKay. Raised in a large family as the youngest of seven siblings, he was outspoken, athletic and full of life. He played basketball throughout his high school at Northern High School which led him to playing at Towson State University, then later Coppin State University. He was preceded in death by his father, John McKay, sisters, Juanita McKoy Evans, Sue Nell McKoy Mooring, Barbara Glendale McKay, and brother Marcus McKay. He leaves to cherish his memories, his mother, Zula Scott McKay, sisters, Patricia McKay and Alice McKoy, two daughters, Shanita Rapatalo (Ronald) and Amelia McKay, grandchildren, Daisanae McKay, Sofio Rapatalo and Ava Rapatalo, three aunts, Minnie Ruth McKay, Dorothy Jamison, and Betty Williams, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, special friend, Herold Dickens and Yvette McKay and other friends. Amiel served proudly in the United States Army for many years. During his military career he served in intelligence, was also an instructor, and did tours in Iraq and South Africa. He served proudly to protect the freedom of the citizens of the United States. We are thankful for his many years of service. He was like a superhero to his daughters, and so many young people that he mentored until his retirement. At an early age Amiel joined the Perkins Square Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Yerby in Baltimore, MD where he was baptized, and served as an usher for many years. Upon his retirement from the military he moved to Lumberton, NC and became a member of Jones Chapel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Thomas Jones.
