James T. Souza, 80, of Fairhaven, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2020, at St. Luke’s Hospital, in New Bedford, surrounded by family after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was the loving husband of 42 years to Susan J. (Sylvia) Souza. Born in Acushnet, son of the late Joseph and Catherine (Manghan) Souza, he grew up in Fairhaven and lived in New Bedford and Acushnet, settling back in Fairhaven in 1975. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Fairhaven and a graduate of New Bedford Vocational High School. Mr. Souza served in the Army National Guard as a Staff Sergeant from 1956-1966. He had worked at the Acushnet Company and later as a Machine Shop Teacher for many years at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School until his retirement at age 61. Jim also coached and officiated Track and Cross Country at Voke for many years. He was a member of the Livesey Club, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, Fairhaven American Legion Post 166 and he was a founder and longtime coach of the Phoenix Girls Softball League. He enjoyed golfing, playing APBA and baseball. He was a season ticket holder for the Paw Sox for many years. Jim was active with the Fairhaven Father’s Day Road Race as a volunteer since its inception. He was on the building committee for the Acushnet Elementary School, an active member of the Fairhaven Hall of Fame Committee and an avid and enthusiastic supporter of all youth sports, especially all of his daughters’ athletic endeavors. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Sharon A. Sampson and her husband Robert of New Bedford, Jean M. Sewall and her husband Wayne, Beth A. Amoruso and her husband Matthew and Kate E. Donly and her husband William all of Fairhaven; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Amanda and Abigail Sampson, Ashley Hiller, Liam and Rowan Donly and Emily Amoruso as well as one step-grandson, Wayne Sewall, III; sister in law, Joan Collins and her husband Larry and brother in law, Raymond Sylvia and his wife Jeannette all of Fairhaven; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours are Monday, from 4-7pm, in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven. His funeral will be Tuesday, February 11, 2020, at 9am, from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am, in St. Mary’s Church, Fairhaven. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jim’s name to the Alzheimer’s Assoc., 309 Waverley Oaks Rd., Waltham, MA 02452.
