Jack Richard Taylor April 25, 1930 – January 31, 2020 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather – Jack Taylor was born in Los Angeles, California, to Edgar Russell Taylor and Bertha Koester Taylor on April 25, 1930. He attended Los Angeles High School and graduated from UCLA, where he played baseball on their varsity team and majored in Marketing, He met his wife Mary Lou at UCLA, and Jack supported and cheered for his school the rest of his life. Living close to the ocean, Jack rode the waves and dived for abalone. He spent his college summers playing baseball in Coos Bay and Coquille, Oregon, and was often named Most Valuable Player. Before the Korean War ended, Jack, eligible for the draft, decided to join the US Air Force. Stationed at Bryan Air Force Base in Texas, he played on the team there, traveling to baseball games, again often named Most Valuable Player. After Texas he trained at Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming. His next assignment, Andrews Air Force Base in Suitland, Maryland, became his last in the Air Force. He came in as an Airman Third and left the service as a First Lieutenant. As clothing sales officer he took care of bedding at the base and a military hospital and was also the Adjutant. He and his wife lived on base, had their first child, a daughter, and from their dining room window could see the Enola Gay in the acreage next door, the plane that dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima. Back in Los Angeles with his family, Jack worked at GE, NCR, and California Computer Company. which sent him to San Jose to open a second Cal Comp office. He worked in the disk drive industry in Silicon Valley and traveled yearly to Japan to analyze each company’s approach to its current routines. He worked in the tech industry his whole career. Asia became a favorite place to travel for him and his wife. Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, China, and, of course, Japan. Most of Europe. Cruises to the Greek isles and Alaska and trips to North and South Africa, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. and Costa Rica with friends from UCLA. Jack loved to travel. His favorite trip was to Switzerland, where he climbed the trail to the Matterhorn. Jack is survived by his wife Mary Lou, two children – Linda (Chuck Drew), Matthew (David Henry), grandson Chris Drew (Catherine), granddaughter Allison (Tim Slevin), and two great-grandchildren, William Drew and Emily Slevin. Lindsay Taylor, nephew, and Nancy Stewart, niece. Jack played golf, tennis, and handball, worked in his garden, planted tomatoes, enjoyed his yard. He watched tournament tennis at Indian Wells and looked forward to Cabo San Lucas each year. Hobbies included bridge, which he learned at the age of six. He enjoyed the Saratoga Men’s Club and worked for Uplift, formerly called Eastfield Ming Quong, For the last fifty years Jack has lived in the same house in a welcoming neighborhood. His neighbors were his friends. Most of all, Papa’s greatest love was his family. And they will never forget his smile. Jack’s family thanks his friends and friends of the family for their love and support. They also thank Good Samaritan Hospital for the fine care he received after his heart attack.
