Barbara Ann (“Babs”) Armistead Chopp, age 85, of La Plata, MD, died February 1, 2020, at her residence. Babs was born in Tuscaloosa, AL, to Wilbur Hale Armistead and Johnnie Marie Armistead. She graduated from Tuscaloosa High School and married Mike Robert Chopp, a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, in 1951. Babs and Mike had five children together. Babs worked at the Charles County Health Department for 28 years. She loved playing bridge, whacking Maryland blue crabs, cheering on the Crimson Tide, watching her grandson Emory play baseball, serving as a docent at Mattawoman Creek Art Center, and visiting with her children and their families. Babs was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Jeanne; her daughter-in-law Angela Richards Chopp, and her husband, Mike, who died just three months before her. She is survived by her children, Michelle Suzanne Michaels, Melissa Blyne Zwiefel, Hale Armistead Chopp (JoAnn), Martha Chopp Clarke (Wayne), and Michael Todd Chopp, along with six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and Mike’s dog, Jake. Granddaughter Angela Chopp Bradshaw speaks for the family in saying, “My grandmother couldn’t bear life without my grandfather. I like to think that they are drinking whiskey freezes now and playing cards together, outside in the shade on a perfect summer day.” Memorial contributions in Babs’ name may be made to Mattawoman Creek Art Center (5565 Upham Pl, Marbury, MD 20658).
