Zara’s Obituary Police Detective Zara Leon Tyrus, Jr. (Ret), 79, passed away suddenly on Monday, January 6, 2020 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born in Tampa, FL on June 10, 1941 to parents Zara L. Tyrus, Sr. and Gladys Lena Manker Tyrus Sams. Zara graduated from New Stanton in 1959 and went on to attend Bethune Cookman College where he obtained an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Zara joined the United States Army and served as a Specialist and then went onto to serve with the Newark Police Department for 20 years, retiring as a Detective in the Robbery and Homicide Division. In the years following his civil service, he continued to work before entering full retirement. Zara was an avid golfer, a talented musician and a supporter of the arts, theatre and movies. His memory will be forever treasured by his son, Gerald L. Tyrus (Kimberly); sister, Wanda T. Brown; former wife, Louise; cousins, nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Zara will be inurned in the Jacksonville National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date in the Jacksonville National Cemetery where Military Honors will be rendered.
