July 14 1943 September 16 2019 (age 76)
Obituary Steve Packer was born July 14, 1943 in Brigham City, Utah, to Wendell Jonathan and Arline Packer. He graduated from Olympus High School in 1961. Steve married the love of his life, Linda in 1968 and had three children, Shelly, Ryan, and Mike, whom he cherished. Steve passed away on September 16, 2019 after battling cancer. Growing up, Steve enjoyed playing basketball, golfing and fly-fishing. After injuring his back in a motorcycle accident, he was limited in what he could do, but his fondness for sports continued on as a fan. In 1978, Steve started coaching his son Ryan in soccer and developed a love for “the beautiful game.” He would spend the next twenty-five years refereeing soccer and coaching Ryan, Mike, and several nephews. Steve became a lifelong fan of the Utah Jazz after they moved to Utah in 1979 and of Real Salt Lake after they were founded in 2004. Steve worked at Hafer’s for over 40 years where he ran the computer department. Following his time at Hafer’s he worked as a regional sales representative for Cardone Industries for 11 years before he retired. Steve surrendered his life to Jesus Christ in early adulthood and then dedicated his life to serving his savior. He was a member of Southeast Christian Church for nearly 50 years and served as an elder and the church accountant. His passion, though, was for studying the Bible and serving as a Sunday School teacher and Bible Study Leader. Steve was devoted to leading his family with the love of Christ. One of Steve’s greatest joys was to be a grandpa, “Papa,” to his seven grandchildren. He doted on them and they could do no wrong. In the same manner that he supported his children, Steve supported his grandchildren in all that they did. He was committed to attending every school performance, soccer game, gymnastics meet, and dance recital that he could. Steve is survived by wife, Linda Packer; children, Shelly (Dan), Ryan (Kristyn), and Mike (Jamie); and grandchildren, Noah, Lauren, Adelayde, Brynley, Andrew, Sam, and Joel. He is also survived by his brother Rodney and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Wendell and Arline Packer and brothers, Stan, Alan, Wayne, and Randell. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 5th at Southeast Christian Church, 1881 East Vine Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84121. There will be a gathering for friends and family at 2:00 pm and the service will begin at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Steve Packer Memorial Fund through Southeast Christian Church. southeast.cc/give.
