Melvin’s Obituary March 7, 1943 – January 18, 2020 Melvin Eugene “Gene” Strother 76, passed away Saturday, January 18, 2020 at his home in San Antonio, TX from complications of the heart and kidneys. He leaves his wife of 57 years, Ann (Funk) Strother; his son, Timothy Strother and daughter-in-law, Melissa Strother; three grandchildren, Mathew Strother, Meagan Valentine, and Kyle Strother; two great grandchildren, Parker and Ryleigh Valentine; two sisters, Joyce Cooke and Etta Henry. Gene was born and raised in Clarke County, Virginia the son of Snowden “Toby” Strother and Elizabeth (Locke) Strother. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Rodney Strother; great granddaughter, Harper Valentine, and many relatives & close friends. After graduating in 1962 from Clarke County High School, he worked for the Virginia State Department of Highways in Berryville as a timekeeper. Several years later he crossed the mountain and became a surveyor for the County of Fairfax. In 1978 Gene was hired as a painter at the Paul Mellon estate, Rokeby Farms, in Upperville. After retirement from Rokeby Farms, he left Virginia for Florida’s fun in the sun lifestyle. He and Ann lived in Florida for twenty years, then in August 2019 moved to San Antonio, TX to be with their son and daughter-in-law. Gene was very much a sports enthusiast. He coached Clarke County Little League & Pony League Baseball, and Little League Football. He played softball on several different teams, where he was given the nickname of “Turkey” by his teammates. Gene was inducted into the Clarke County Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. He was also an avid golfer, and on occasion enjoyed wagering a couple dollars on Charles Town’s thoroughbreds. A celebration of Gene’s life will be held at VFW Post 9760, 425 Buckmarsh St., Berryville on Saturday, April 18th at 12:00 noon. Read More
