March 21 1937 January 26 2020
James Gordon Wright, Sr., age 82 of Bloomington, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2020 after a courageous battle with the effects of his stroke 6 years earlier. Jim was born March 21, 1937 in Muncie, Indiana to his parents, Harold and Virginia (Thorne) Wright. Jim was a graduate of Gaston High School in 1955. He then entered the General Motors Institute college for 2 years before he decided that corporate life was not for him. He then enrolled at Ball State Teacher’s College in Muncie, In. and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1960 followed by his master’s degree in 1962 while also working full time and starting a family. Jim had a very lengthy and rewarding teaching career. He started at Knightstown High School, then Decatur High School before moving to Bloomington in 1973 where he joined the staff at Bloomington High School North teaching chemistry, math and physics. He was also the Boys Varsity Track and Cross Country coach for many years at North. He and his wife Peg moved to Florida in 1984 to help take care of his mother where he taught at Dixie Hollins High School and then became a physics instructor for the Center for Advanced Technology and the registrar for another high school in Pinellas County, Florida (the 2 jobs he loved the most). After the passing of his mother, Jim and Peg moved back to Bloomington in 2000 where he rejoined the staff at Bloomington North for 2 years and then taught at Tabernacle Christian School in Martinsville and Ivy Tech college in Bloomington for a few more years until finally retiring in 2004. In retirement, Jim loved to fish and work in his woodworking shop where he made beautiful pieces of furniture and smaller pieces for family and friends. Jim’s work ethic, sense of responsibility and love of his work allowed him to shine in his professional career. His supportive nature and considerate disposition made him loved in his personal life. Jim often said that he was a lucky man and that he wouldn’t change a thing he did in his life. Jim leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Margaret Rose (McCreery) Wright of Bloomington, daughter Lianne Nicol (John) of Parker, Colorado, son Jim G. Wright Jr. (Laurie) of Newport Ritchie, Florida and son Joe Wright (Amy) of Bloomington; grandchildren: Kyle Wright (Maggie), Torey Sonka (Ryan), Meredith Wright, Maddie Walls (Drake), Josh Nicol, and Nick Wright (Lindsey); and one great granddaughter Eve Wright. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Kayleen Hanley and Bill Wright. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 30, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the Stone Ridge Baptist Church.
