Dr. John Carl Libke, 85, of Norman, passed from this life Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at his home. Dr. Libke was born January 15, 1935, in Freelandville, Indiana, the son of Dr. Avon Burr and Josephine Yung Libke. Raised in Sullivan IN, John attended Sullivan High School and graduated 1953 before attending Indiana State University 1953-57. He married his grade school sweetheart, Bevera L. Boyle (1935-2014), of Sullivan in 1957. John attended Indiana University Dental School 1957-60 and served as a U.S. Naval Officer 1960-62. Upon completion of his service, John established his dental practice in Columbus, Indiana in 1962. Devoted to his family and community, John was involved in Columbus youth baseball and a commissioner for Columbus Youth Hockey Association. He was a past member of Columbus Rotary Club, American Dental Association and one of the founding members of his dental school class Falinx Society. Due to his love of nature, John retired to a farm west of Brownstown, IN, where he restored a log cabin built in 1840. He was a creator, inventor, talented carpenter, and an improviser to the last detail. As an avid fisherman, John made many trips with close friends and family into Canadian waters but also boasts of catching, and releasing, a northern pike at Harrison Lake. He was a small game hunter and founding member of the Ram Cat Taylor Squirrel Hunt, which has occurred annually for 52 years. Members, if not already related, were considered brothers. To all his friends and family, John is known for his wry sense of humor, his creative challenges with homemade trophies, competitive tennis matches, and his love for his black labs. John is survived by his children, Melissa Ann (Edward) Watson of Fishers, Mathew John (Susan) Libke of Indianapolis and Mark Patrick Libke of Chicago, grandchildren, Brittany Morgan (Peter) Davis, Brandon Armstrong (Anja) Kiel, Luke Edward Watson. Megan Lynn Libke, Zane Mathew Libke, Isabella Josephine Libke, Oliver Reeve Libke, and Sidney Baden Libke. He’s also survived by 3 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, his brother, James Edward (Rebecca) Libke of Sullivan, and dear friends Jim and Holly Foster, and Shirley Blackwell. John is preceded in death by his parents and brother Joseph Burr (Norma) Libke of Reno, NV. John’s family would also like to thank his recent caregivers, Martha, Carol, Kelly and Mary Ann, whose commitment allowed him to remain at home. A time of gathering for family and friends will be 12:00 p.m. (noon) to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street.
