Danny’s Obituary Danny B. Cowan, 67, of Sanford, passed away on December 27, 2019 at the UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. He was born on October 10, 1952 to the late Lemuel “Dexter” Cowan and Opal Ruth Halliburton Cowan. He is preceded in death by his younger brother Pat Craig Cowan. He leaves behind his loving wife of 12 years, Janet Gresham; two sons, Danny Cowan, Jr. and Derek Cowan; one brother, Michael Cowan, Sr., and wife, Roxie; many nieces and nephews; a stepdaughter, Bessie Dietrich Goggins; and a wonderful pup named Choco. Originally from San Antonio, Danny played guitar every day of his life, and he was a committed, talented musician. He played in many groups, including The Danny Cowan Band and The Danny Cowan Group. With The Danny Cowan Band, Danny recorded a blues album titled “Drivin’ Back to Texas,” including songs “Lonesome Heart Blues” and “When The Blues Follow You Home.” In addition to his own musical prowess, Danny was an admirer of other musicians, and often collected their music and memorabilia. At different points, Danny was even the largest collector of Jimi Hendrix memorabilia in the world. Just as important as his work as a musician and knowledge of music history, Danny was known to family and friends for his kindness and sincerity, and he was an animal lover with a huge heart. There will be a graveside service on Friday, January 3, 2020 at 10 a.m. at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery (8220 Bragg Blvd, Fort Bragg, NC 28310). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Texas Music Project (www.facebook.com/donate/1104822736515666/) and San Antonio Sound Garden (www.facebook.com/donate/471429040456501/). Danny deeply believed in supporting the success of young, aspiring musicians, and he would have fully embraced such amazing organizations in his hometown and home state. Read More
