Leonard A. O. Campe was born on September 8, 1924, to Henry and Edith (Thate) Campe in Pleasant Prairie Township, Martin County, MN. He attended grade school at Pleasant Prairie country school and graduated from Granada High School. After graduating, Leonard helped his Dad on the farm in the Spring. On December 10, 1942, Leonard enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served, including service in the Pacific Theatre, until being honorably discharged on March 26, 1946. On June 7, 1950, Leonard was united in marriage to Joan Wannarka at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Fairmont, MN. They made their home in Fairmont and were blessed with two daughters, Jill in 1955 and Jayne in 1961. Leonard worked at Farmers Co-op Creamery and for several years at Breen Implement. In the late 1950’s, Leonard accepted employment at the Fairmont Post Office where he was carrier, clerk and was then appointed Postmaster. He worked tirelessly on saving money for the postal service and could be seen out measuring the routes by walking them in Fairmont and driving the truck routes to save on manpower hours and times. While Leonard was Postmaster he was also selected by the postal department as “accident investigator” for much of the surrounding area to determine causes and to be sure when postal property, vehicles or issues were involved, that everything was taken care of in a fair manner. Leonard retired as Postmaster on December 1, 1986. After his retirement, Leonard and Joan enjoyed their retirement together golfing, spending many winters at their condo in Arizona and later bus tours all over the United States. Their greatest joy was their grandchildren who always got Grandma to take them shopping and Grandpa to take them on morning walks to have coffee with his friends. Leonard was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Kiwanis, Interlaken Golf Club, National Association of Postmasters of the United States, American Legion Post 36, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222. He loved golfing, fishing, duck and pheasant hunting. He was also a Vikings Football fan and stamp and coin collector. Leonard is survived by his loving wife of 69 ½ years, Joan Campe of Fairmont; daughters, Jill (Mike) Boike of Ham Lake and Jayne (Joe) Morley of Cambridge; grandchildren, Jennifer (Jake) Armerding, Michelle Boike, Jessica Boike, Erin (Travis) Christensen, Emily (Wei) Yu and Andrew Morley (fiancée, Anne Gleich); great-grandchildren, Jude and Larkin Armerding, and Sarah and Leah Christensen; brother, Lowell (Shirley) Campe of Algona, IA; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Edith Campe; father and mother-in-law, George and Alma Wannarka; siblings, Philip (Anna Mae) Campe, Eleanore (Irvin) Wille, Cleo (Leonard) Meschke, Ruby (Kenneth) Rudy and Truman (Shirley) Campe. Leonard’s family wishes to express their appreciation and thanks for the loving and professional care he received while at Ingleside, GoldFinch, Fairmont Mayo Hospital, and from both Dr. Green and Dr. Joseph. www.lakeviewfuneralhome.net Read More
