Mr. Walter Herman Anderson, 98, of Lenoir, went to his Heavenly Home on Saturday, December 28, 2019 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. He was born June 16, 1921 in Burke County to the late Thomas Walter Anderson and Annie Michael Anderson. Mr. Anderson proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. He attended North Carolina State University where he earned his B.S. Degree in Vocational Agriculture and his M.S. Degree in Adult Education. He worked 5 years for the Agriculture Extension Service and later retired as Director of Area Development from Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation after 23 years of service. Mr. Anderson was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Lenoir where he served in many different capacities over the years, and a member of the Lenoir Lions Club for 55 years. Mr. Anderson received numerous awards during his lifetime, with one of the most prestigious being the Order of the Long Leaf Pine presented to him by former Governor James Hunt. The Herman Anderson Award was established to recognize local leaders in economic development. The award is still given annually. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Bolick Anderson; sisters, Ruebelle Newton, Bessie Williams, Mildred Silver, and Sadie Barlowe; brother, Arnold Anderson; and daughter-in-law, Jan Anderson. Mr. Anderson is survived by his son, Les Anderson; daughter, Sarah Ann Smith and husband Tom; grandchildren, Zachary Anderson, Caisey Anderson, and Matthew Smith; and brother, Donald Anderson and wife Shirley. A memorial service celebrating the life of Mr. Anderson will be held at First United Methodist Church of Lenoir on Sunday, January 5, 2020 at 4:00 PM with Reverend Dr. Dave Melton officiating. The family will receive friends in the Christian Life Center following the service. Military Honors will be provided by the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard and the United States Navy. The family requests wearing red to honor Mr. Anderson’s love of NC State and the Atlanta Braves.
