April 18 1930 December 23 2019
Mr. Ferman E. Woodell, 89, of Asheboro, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2019, at The Randolph Hospice House surrounded by his family. A native of Randolph County, Ferman was born on April 18, 1930, the eleventh of twelve children born to the late George and Addie Voncannon Woodell. He was a graduate of Asheboro High School. Upon graduation, he went on to serve in the United States Army, including most notably answering the call to serve in the Korean War, where he was wounded in combat. Among his honors and accolades for heroism and valor, Mr. Woodell received two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, the United Nations medal, the South Korean medal, and the Cold War medal. After returning home from the war, Ferman soon met Peggy Jean Hill and insisted on their courtship; the two were later married on July 27, 1957, a Christ-centered love that proved to stand the test of time and inspires many today. Mr. Woodell was an avid sportsman, enjoying any time that he could spend outdoors or on the water, especially making memories with his children and grandchildren. He was a devoted Christian and proud American. God, family, country: that was Ferman! In addition to his parents and all of his siblings, Mr. Woodell was preceded in death by a daughter, Penny; granddaughter, Ashley; great-granddaughter, Layla; and daughter-in-law, Bethann. Mr. Woodell is survived by his loving wife of over 62 years, Peggy of the home; sons, Jeffery (Christine) of Asheboro, Anthony (Patsy) of Asheboro, Jerry of Lake Tillery, Mike of Asheboro; daughter, Lisa (Mike) Hickman of Sanford; 20 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Fannie Moore; and a host of dear family members, friends, and loved ones, including special children, Sherrie & Danny Dunn, Ralph & Tammy Overman, and Joe & Vicky Brown. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 28th at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel in Asheboro with the Revs. Marc Myers and Michael Poindexter officiating. Burial will follow at Flag Springs United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 27th from 6-8 pm at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Randolph County Honor Guard, PO Box 1672, Asheboro, NC 27204; or to any charity serving veterans.
