He grew up in Detroit and attended Corpus Christi grade school and graduated from Pershing High School. After high school, Bernard enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Korean War. Afterwards, he began his 37-year career at Chrysler, and later achieved a master’s degree in 1957 in Business Administration. Bernard and Louise raised their nine children in Warren, Michigan in the house that he built with his brothers. They were devoted Catholics and active members of St. Mark Catholic Church. He was a lector and a catechist, and he and Louise did marriage encounter for the Archdiocese of Detroit. He also taught descriptive geometry for the University of Detroit.
