September 26 1984 December 10 2019 (age 35)
Obituary Ava Christine Ross was born on September 26, 1984, in Wilmington Delaware to Gwendolyn Yvonne Ross. She peacefully departed this life on December 10, 2019. Ava was an energetic and kind-hearted child with a high level of curiosity. She spent her early years developing bonds with her cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. She spent much of her time playing with her cousins and watching her favorite movie ‘Rocky’ with her beloved “Teddy” in her arms. Ava enjoyed family gatherings, vacations, and overnight visits with other relatives, and she developed a strong bond with her grandfather Kenneth “PopPop” Ross Sr., and her grandmother Sonja “Mommom” Ross. When Ava was only 3 years old her mother met Donald C. Matthews. The three quickly became a family, and within a few years Gwen and Don welcomed their 2nd and 3rd daughters Dawn and Dana Matthews. Ava was a proud big sister and spent much of her time caring for, guiding and protecting her younger sisters. She could be found cooking for, cleaning after, and advising her younger siblings at various points throughout their lives. Ava possessed a strong work ethic and a strong sense of independence throughout her education and professional years. She received her education in the Christiana and Appoquinimink School districts. She began learning the value of professionalism early on and consistently worked with her grandmother’s small business as she grew older. Ava also developed a love for music as she got older, and the love she developed for R&B and Hip Hop music during her teenage years followed her throughout her life. After moving to Middletown in 2000, Ava participated in the High School’s ROTC program. She excelled in this program, and it led her to academic achievement as well. Ava made the honor roll several times in her 11th and 12th grade years of schooling, and graduated from Middletown High School in May of 2002. Following High School, Ava took her many skills and applied them in a full time job within the family business, as well as with her time working in banking with Discover Card Services in 2005. In 2006, Ava took the next step in her journey and fulfilled her dream of having a family of her own. She and Michael Devine celebrated the birth of Jasmine Yvonne Devine on January 31st of that year. Ava was a natural mother and dedicated her life to providing Jasmine with any and everything possible. Lovingly referring to her daughter as “Buttercup,” Ava encouraged the same good nature and natural independence in her daughter that she displayed in her own early years. She strived to fill her daughter with a strong sense of love and family and always put her daughter first. In June of 2006 Ava was diagnosed Multiple Sclerosis and spent 13 years battling the disorder along with some other health complications. Throughout this battle, Ava leaned on her family for support, and she continued to fight valiantly to be there for her family and her daughter as long as possible. Ava leaves her devoted mother and father Gwendolyn and Donald Matthews, her beloved daughter Jasmine Yvonne Devine, her two loving sisters Dawn Yvonne Matthews and Dana Alzenia Matthews, her nephew Jamal Grimes Jr., her grandmother Alzeina Hamlin, biological father Odell Mayfield, and many other beloved family members and friends to cherish her memory. She joins her earlier departed grandparents Kenneth Ross Sr., Sonja Ross, and Herman Hamlin as she moves on to a better place. Her Celebration of Life Service will be on Thursday, December 19, 2019, at Congo Funeral Home, 2317 N. Market Street, Wilmington, DE 19802, where viewing will be from 9:00-10:45 am. Interment will be private.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Ava Christine Ross September 26 1984 December 10 2019 (age 35).
