Born in Vienna, Austria, she survived WWII and maintained her survivor’s spirit throughout her life. She made her way to the United States and built a full and wonderful life with her husband, children, and extended family. First in Middletown, later in Cromwell, and eventually Rocky Hill. She was the most fun mother and grandmother to many, even beyond her immediate family, and a friend to everyone she met. She inspired many with stories of growing up during the war. Her kindness, wit, candid nature, humor and genuine interest in the lives of others ingratiated her to all she met. She shared her love of history, literature and cinema with many throughout her long life. Her sisters, Trudie Jackson and Hilde Gagnon as well as her beloved son, Jerry Nicholas predeceased her. She is survived by her husband Joe Elbe, daughters, Evelyn “Lisa” Libby and Caroline Nicholas-Brunetto; by four adored grandchildren, five precious great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends. She was the center and love of our lives. She will be deeply missed and mourned and forever remembered. “We love you and will see you again.” Calling hours will be held Thursday January 2nd from 5 to 7 pm at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. A graveside service will be held on Friday at 10 am at Pine Grove Cemetery, Middletown. In lieu of flowers, her family requests you make a donation to Cerebral Palsy Foundation, at donate.cerebralpalsyfoundation.org.
