Robert’s Obituary Robert Francis Mijares of Leander, Texas passed away on November 10, 2019 at the age of 44. He was born in Manila, Philippines to Ramon Mijares and Rebecca Ong of Cedar Park, Texas. He is survived by many loving family members and dear friends. Francis always put others first and always managed to empower you to be the best version of yourself. You never left a conversation with Francis without a smile. He truly wanted to make everyone happy. To our family, he was the instigator of wild and crazy ideas that brought us closer to each other. He was the favorite “guncle” who made everyone laugh. Kids always gravitated to him because of his playful personality. He loved to celebrate life with elaborate parties which were elegant and fabulous. There was no doing things halfway with Francis, he was always all in. He lived every day with no “regerts”. Francis studied nursing at Lamar University in Beaumont, where he worked as an emergency nurse at Baptist Hospital. He then received his Masters Degree in Nursing from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He opened his first clinic, Calder Place Family Practice in 2005. Calder Place Family Practice was featured in Physician’s Practice magazine in 2010 for the use of green office technology. In 2008, he founded Skinologie Medical Spa which was recognized in 2010 as the best medical spa in the South East Texas region. In 2013, he moved back to his hometown of Cedar Park to be closer to his family. He is the founder, owner, and Family Nurse Practitioner at Zest Family Practice and was loved by his colleagues and patients. Zest Family Medicine and Skinologie Medical Spa in Cedar Park was voted “Best Medical Spa” in 2018 and 2019. He was also voted “Best Doctor” in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019. Francis was a giver and truly cared about everyone he met. His previous work included quality management programs for the care of HIV-positive patients in the Houston area and a youth-centered HIV primary care clinic that has earned national recognition. He was the board vice president for Triangle Aids Network in 2011-2012 and was a Board member from 2004-2010. He also served as a consultant and grant reviewer for the United States Health Resources and Administration to address the national nursing shortage and to promote advanced nursing practice. He was committed to treating his patients with respect and to “meet them where they are” in their health care journey. Francis cared about each patient as if they were family. He was an activist for the LGBTQ+ community. He was a founding board member of Central Texas Transgender Health Coalition in 2016. He was also a founding member and coordinator of Southeast Texas Nurse Practitioner from 2006-2007. Francis was finishing the Doctorate of Nursing Practice Program at the University of Texas at Austin to promote research and care for the transgender community. He co-authored and presented research on transgender studies in Canada at the 30th International Nursing Research Congress for Sigma Theta Tau to establish transgender care guidelines. He has multiple published research articles and presentations. He was also male model of the year and would like to be remembered for his good looks and chiseled abs. To everyone who really knew him, Francis will be remembered as someone who lived life to the fullest and did everything in his power to break down barriers and crusade for those who needed a voice. We are pleased to announce the new Robert Francis Mijares Memorial Fund. A partnership with OutYouth Austin and the Central Texas Transgender Health Coalition, founded by Francis, to continue his life’s work of providing competent and compassionate care to the transgender and entire LGBTQIA+ community.
