WESTFORD – Ruth C. (Dahlquist) Regan, 90, passed away on Oct. 10, 2019 after a period of declining health. Born in Boston to Helen and Carl Dahlquist, Ruth was a 57-year resident of Maynard, MA and spent the last years of her life at Nashoba Park Assisted Living in Ayer, MA. When her children were small, Ruth was the 50’s and 60’s mom who made just about everything from scratch, sewed and knit their clothes, and was a den mother. On a limited budget, Ruth saw to it that her four children had a well-rounded upbringing, including scouts, sports, swimming and piano lessons, library and museum visits, state parks and beach days, and weekly Mass. She was a mom who had homemade cookies coming out of the oven when you came home from school. After being a housewife until the youngest of her four children was in Elementary School, Ruth became the bookkeeper and a driving instructor of her former husband’s Safeway Auto School in Maynard. At 56, she graduated from Framingham State College after taking day and evening classes over a period of 14 years. She was a longtime customer service representative at Concord Co-operative Bank in Maynard. Ruth served on the Maynard Board of Library Trustees for several terms as well as on the Maynard Conservation Commission. She also volunteered at the library, helping out with the book sales. She was an avid walker and member of the Walk ‘N Mass Volkssport Walking Club. Ruth explored her Swedish heritage as a member of The Swedish Ancestry Research Association (SARA) of Worcester. A passionate gardener, she was also a member of the Maynard Community Gardeners and often manned their table at the Maynard Farmers’ Market. Ruth enjoyed following politics, bird watching, and WGBH-Ch-2. She was a great reader and had an ever-inquisitive mind. She generally had a project going: a puzzle, a rug, a painting, something knitted or crocheted or new garden plantings. Although her independent nature chafed at the restrictions of being in an assisted living facility, she made friends and developed a fan club among the staff, who admired her wit and insights. They had many a good laugh with her which offset her less sunny days. She was pre-deceased by her former husband, Henry F. Regan, grandson Sean Regan, parents, and siblings, Ronald and Theodore Dahlquist and Joan (Dahlquist) Krom. She is survived by her four children: Debra and her husband Lee Cleveland of Framingham, Kenneth Regan and his wife Kim of Snellville, GA, Barbara and her husband William Nelson of Stow, and Sandra Regan of Ayer, as well as six grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Donations in her memory may be made to: Maynard Public Library, 77 Nason Street, Maynard, MA 01754. Burial will be private and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
