Russell S Polizzi 1928 2019

1928 2019
Obituary of Russell S. Polizzi Russell S. Polizzi, 90, formerly of Falconer, NY, passed away Monday (October 14, 2019) in the Lutheran Home where he and his lovely wife Annette had resided together for the past two years. A lifelong area resident, he was born November 21, 1928, in Jamestown, the son of the late Thomas and Grace Ognibene Polizzi. Russell was a 1948 graduate of Falconer High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, proudly serving in both the Army and Navy. In earlier years, Russell was employed by Allegheny Steel. Later, he was employed by Ludwig Construction as a cement layer and carpenter. Prior to retirement he was employed by WCA Hospital in the maintenance department. After retirement, Russ felt the need to continue to stay busy and took a job at Wegmans in the maintenance department. He received employee of the month several times. Still after retirement he always had tools in hand ready to fix anything that needed fixing. Russ was known as “Popeye” to his friends because of his strength and his Italian heritage of picking wild greens in the fields. To his closest family, he was known as “Saro,” the nickname for Rosario (which was his birth name). He was a fun, loving father and husband who taught his sons the importance of hard work, respect for others, and survival in even the toughest of times. In later years, spending time with his grandchildren brought him so much joy. He was a devout Catholic, attending both St. James and Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Parishes. He was a member of Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church, Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, Herman Kent Post 777, American Legion, John W. Tiffany Post 53 VFW. His favorite pastimes included hunting, fishing, gardening and watching football and cooking shows. He would propagate oregano plants from the seeds that his own father brought from Sicily in 1921. His son Russ does the same to this day. At 88, he still loved driving with Annette to casinos, Canada, western NY and Erie PA to visit his son. Along the way, he still had to stop in open fields to pick young dandelion and burdock plants to prepare some of his favorite meals. That was him. Your laugh, wit and smile will be forever missed. We love you. Surviving are his wife Annette M. Cimino Polizzi whom he married June 12, 1954 in Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church; two sons: Russell M. Polizzi (Nancy) of Erie, PA, Anthony V. Polizzi (Donna) of Florida; two grandchildren: Brittany M. Fisher (Xavier), Russell A. Polizzi; two great grandchildren Lillian Lorel Fisher and Isaiah Fisher; a sister Josephine (Richard) Campbell of Falconer, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank niece Marlana Hitchcock for the unwavering care she provided to Russell and Annette over the last several years. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas J. Polizzi; three sisters: Rosalie Velez, Anne Leone and Sally Chiazzese. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of the staff of the Lutheran Home for the undivided support, care and attention they provided. The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday in the Christ Chapel of the Lutheran Home, 715 Falconer St., Jamestown. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday also in the Christ Chapel of Lutheran. Rev. Joseph Janancek, pastor of Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, P.O. Box, Memphis, TN 38101 or Roswell Park Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 631, Buffalo, NY 14240-9856.
