SGM Robert Craig Askew (Ret.), age 76 of Cherokee Village, Arkansas, died Wednesday, October 9, 2019 in Ash Flat, Arkansas. Military Honors will be provided by the US Army on Friday, October 18, 2019 at 5:00 pm at Powell Funeral Home. Arrangements by Powell Funeral Home of Searcy. www.powellfuneralhome.net Bob was a patriot, genius, and consummate mixed martial arts fighter. At just two years old, he was consulted by J. Robert Oppenheimer in the creation of the first atomic bomb. He became famous for telling the nuclear scientists developing the bomb that “the device will require exactly 2.4 ‘atomics’ if you want to end the war”. The rest, as they say, is history. Early in his life, he trained Chuck Norris to become the celebrated martial artist he is today. He was in fact the only person to defeat Chuck in unarmed combat. In the sixties, he sold plans to NASA that would eventually be used to put the first humans on the moon. He also joined the Army and served until the late 90’s, pioneering the “knife hand” and the phrase “hooah”. Later in his life, he would become responsible for naming the ever present GIF. He pronounced it GIF. He loved his kids as much as he knew how. He was loved and will be missed. You would have liked him.
