She was the eldest daughter of the late Orpha Ester Goff Pratt and James Richard Claude Pratt. She lived her entire life in the state she loved, West Virginia. She often called it “The most beautiful place on Earth.” Lulu graduated from Tunnelton High School. While there she became a Princess of the Preston County Buckwheat Festival of 1952. After graduation she moved to Fairmont to become a long-distance operator with Bell Telephone. Taking every course that West Virginia Junior College offered, she completed her business and secretarial degree in 1968. With this degree she also earned her certificate in the Nancy Taylor Finishing School held in New York City. Lulu worked as an executive secretary at Alcan Aluminum. Later she worked in the insurance and billing department of the Manchin Clinic. She belonged to St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church for over 60 years. She faithfully raised her children Catholic and encouraged them to do the same with their families. He faith remained at the forefront of her life. She worked diligently with the Ladies Group to support the Church and Church projects. Lulu was well known for her pita pieta, an Italian Christmas cake sold at the Feast of the Seven Fishes Festival. She loved her church and the ladies she worked with. After a lifetime of love and devotion to her family, she went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 24, 2019. Lulu transitioned into eternal life at her home surrounded by loved ones. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Daniel Joseph Pratt and David Grubb; three sisters, Shirley Pratt Zuchowski, Patricia Watkins Pratt and Mary Helen McCandless Stretmater. Lulu was also preceded in death by her first husband Richard Charles McCandless. Robert Dewy Grubb survives his wife of 52 years. Also surviving, one daughter, Linda Christine McCandless Serian and husband Ralph Serian; two sons, Richard Charles McCandless, Jr. and wife Maureen Taylor McCandless and Robert Dewy Grubb, Jr. and wife Jennifer Fleming Grubb; step son, Michael Grubb and wife Joan Grubb. She is survived by two sisters, Ruth Pratt Shannon and husband Dr. Kennard Shannon and Sandra Grubb Mueller; four brothers, Darwin Pratt and wife Elaine Trout Pratt, Thomas Pratt, James Zuchowski, and Daniel Stretmater. Lulu’s surviving grandchildren include, Jennifer Desiree Serian, Eric Shawn McCandless, Kyle Christan McCandless and companion Alayna Wesoloski, Tori Brenna Grubb, and Lily Christine Grubb. Two great grandchildren, McKenzie Jo McCandless and Kaitlyn Rayne McCandless. Many beloved nieces and nephews; close longtime friends, Julia Pride and Gerry Arnold, who selflessly helped care for Lulu during her illness. A special thank you to Amedisys Hospice and caregivers Tara Phillips, Misty Straight, and Sherry Queen. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in memory of Lulu to West Virginia University Children’s Hospital. The family will receive friends at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, 407 Jackson Street in Fairmont, on Monday, October 28, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Catholic Funeral Liturgy will be on Monday at the church at 11:00 a.m. with Father Joseph Konikattil as celebrant.
