John Tilmer Obie Jr., 73, passed away on Friday, September 27, 2019 due to complications from COPD and Lung Cancer. He was born on November 19, 1945 to the union of John Tilmer Obie Sr., and Mary Lee in Sapula, Oklahoma. His parents moved to Kansas City, Missouri. John is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Donnell, James and Richard Obie. John attended Manual High School in Kansas City, Missouri and successfully completed the 11th grade. John dibbled and dabbled at several jobs until he became employed at the Osteopathic Center where he worked as a custodian for five years. For a short while, he worked at the Ford Motor Plant and later, the Water Company for which he was employed 20 years until his retirement. During his retirement he liked working on cars. His specialty was brakes. Everyone knew him as the “Brake-Man.” He worked alongside Mr. Carl Collins. Carl worked in the area of heating and air conditioning. These two gentlemen were a “special team,” if you know what I mean. My daddy John Tilmer was a big sports fan, he loved the Chief’s and the Royal’s and he loved watching basketball. However, he wasn’t a LeBron James fan, I think he liked him, but didn’t like the “King James part.” My daddy John liked eating barbecue and spending time with the family. He also liked hanging-out with my Uncle Jimmy and his buddy June. Daddy liked getting the “411” on everything and everybody. My sister will miss calling my father and giving him the “low-down” on everybody. My father John Tilmer had many friends, old and young. Everybody knew Mr. Obie. My father John Obie Jr. joined Wayside Community Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Penniston Preside. After the passing of this minister, John didn’t attend church as regular. However, he did read his bible. John had a lot of struggles later in life, but he turned to his bible for help. John prayed to his almighty Lord for the forgiveness of his sins. The precious memory of John Timer Obie Jr. will be forever cherished by his loving wife Joan Obie; sons Donnie and Darryl; daughter Antoinette (Maverick); brother Michael Obie; sister Denise Obie; twelve grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces and friends. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Lawrence A. Jones and Sons Linwood Chapel. Visitation 9:00 a.m. Interment Twelve Gates Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
