Joan Teurman Mahnken January 20, 1931 – October 22, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card| Memorial Donation Joan Teurman Mahnken was born January 20, 1931 in Elk City, Oklahoma to Ola Mae (House) and Robert Teurman. She passed away October 22, 2019 at Lubbock, Texas at the age of 88 years 9 month and 3 days. Joan grew up in the Taylor community where she graduated from Highway High School in 1949. After graduation she furthered her education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. While in college, she met and was later married to Bob Mahnken at Mangum, Oklahoma on January 22, 1951. Together they moved to Tishomingo and Lindsey, Oklahoma before moving to Shamrock, Texas in 1955. They owned and operated Mahnken Drug Store for 31 years while they raised their family in the Shamrock community. Joan was always available and was often seen in an instant when she was needed at the store. After their retirement in 1986 they remained in the Shamrock area where she was a member of the Methodist Church, widely renowned for her cooking and volunteered with the Irish Helping Hands. Joan also was an avid Bridge player and enjoyed gardening, needle work, painting, reading, loved opera music and making her famous 3 layer chocolate cakes for family members birthdays. Later in 2009 she moved Lubbock, Texas where she lived independently at Raider Ranch. She is preceded in death by her parents, one son, Van Mahnken and her husband of 44 years, Bob. She is survived by her 2 daughters, Kelly Janes and husband, Kim, Elk City, OK and Melanie Miller and husband, Alan, Ropesville, TX; 3 grandchildren, Kris Janes, Austin, TX, Maci McCabe, New Home, TX and Vance McCabe, Lubbock, TX; 2 step-grandchildren, Morgan Lane, Lubbock, TX and Mason Miller, Ropesville, TX; 1 nephew, Butch Mahnken and wife, Peggy, Jet, OK and a host of other relatives and friends. The family request memorial donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital online or a check can be mailed to 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the charity of your choice in Joan’s name. Graveside services will be held Monday, October 28, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at Fairlawn Cemetery officiated by Pastor Scott Rodgers. Arrangements are under the direction of Whinery Funeral Service.
