David M. Rush was born in Rockford, IL February 28, 1938, and passed away October 28, 2019. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Catherine Higgins Rush and brother, Stephen Rush. He leaves a brother, Jack Rush [Michelle], sister-in-law Diannia Crum [Robert], nephews Jon [Nicole], Christopher [Beth], Michael [Amelinda], Trevor [Sonya], and niece, Jennifer Rush. David attended St. Thomas Elementary and graduated from St. Teresa High School in 1956. He attended Springfield Junior College, Springfield, IL where he majored in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in history. He worked for Black & Co. for several years and then for the Caterpillar Tractor Co. in Decatur. David traveled to New York City, Washington, D.C. and made several trips to California. He toured the Los Angeles Police Department with a high school friend, a LAPD detective. He made trips to Connecticut to see the Gillette Castle, to the West Point Military Academy, and to Annapolis in 1991 to see his nephew, Christopher, begin his career at the Naval Academy. David is a dedicated movie fan; his favorite movie was The Quiet Man. He is an original member of the movie group at the Avon Theater. He was a guest columnist for the Decatur Herald & Review and volunteered in the Local History Room of the Decatur Public Library for several years. David has maintained a lifelong interest in Arthur Conan Doyle and his fictional creation, Sherlock Holmes. He is well-informed on the Victorian and Edwardian eras in England and is a recognized expert on all of Conan Doyle’s writings. He was made a member and sole American representative of the Arthur Conan Doyle (Crowborough) Establishment in 1990. In 1992 he traveled to England for the dedication of the Arthur Conan Doyle Memorial and visited the Conan Doyle Retrospective at the Newberry Library in Chicago in 2003, meeting many fellow Conan Doyle enthusiasts. David has published several essays in various journals and in the book, Phantom of the Opera, by Gaston Leroux. Visitation will be held from 10 am until the time of the Funeral Liturgy at 11 am, Monday, November 4, 2019, at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery.
