Clarence’s Obituary Seckel, Clarence George, Jr., passed away, Saturday, October 26, 2019. Beloved husband of Susan Seckel; dearest father of Elizabeth Ann (Timothy) Murphy; dear uncle of Lauren Ann Waldrop and Julia Marie Weiser; longtime educator and friend of many. Clarence was born in St. Louis on January 16, 1946. He received both his B.S. and M. Ed. degrees from the University of Missouri in St. Louis and his M.A. in History from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he specialized in the interdisciplinary study of Africa. A life-long educator, Clarence worked in East St. Louis School District 189 for 37 years. He began his career as a sixth-grade teacher at Park Elementary School and then went on to teach history at Lincoln Senior High School where he chaired the Social Studies Department and developed the school’s first African-American Studies Curriculum. From 1990 until his retirement in 2006 he served as Curriculum Coordinator and Supervisor for Social Studies for the school district. In addition to publishing numerous articles and serving as a textbook consultant, Clarence mentored countless teachers from Illinois and throughout the United States in workshops and month-long summer institutes funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. His students and colleagues alike remember his dedication, concern for all, and his wonderful sense of humor.
