Buck’s Obituary Buck Donald “Don” Dooley passed away October 11, 2019 in Stillwater. A life-long resident of Cushing, Don was born in the home of Jake Freund north east of Cushing, Oklahoma on June 13, 1926 and was the youngest of ten children born to Eli Jackson and Victoria Elizabeth (Nance) Dooley. As a young child of the Depression, Don worked alongside his father as a farm hand. This instilled strong, life-long work ethics. At the age of ten years old, he began working as a ranch hand feeding livestock before and after school. Don rode his horse to school and graduated eighth grade from Sunnyside School. As a very young teen he also bailed hay and later worked at Rothman’s grocery store in downtown Cushing. Except for a short stint as a roughneck in 1944 at the age of seventeen, he worked for Farmers’ Union Coop from 1942 to 1952 and became manager of Farmers’ Union Coop station located on the corner of Broadway and Seay. In 1952 Don began his 16-year career with Hughes Concrete Company driving a 1947 KB6 International cement truck. When Continental Concrete Company purchased Hughes Concrete in 1968, Don continued for 31 more years as a cement truck driver for Continental Concrete until he retired at the age of 73 years old on July 2, 1999 to take care of his beloved wife who suffered with dementia. Don continued to do odd jobs for Jerry Holderread for several years after his official retirement. Up until recently Don still enjoyed mowing his own lawn, as a well as his youngest son’s yard and doing small home repair projects. Don had a remarkable and vast knowledge of Cushing’s history and growth. He never met a stranger, and with a smile, would strike up a conversation whether it was on the job, at the Saturday night dances, or on one of the vacation trips he and Wilma enjoyed. Family always came first with Don. Don and Wilma Florene (Dennis) met while he was working at Farmers’ Union station, and she was delivering milk for Williams’ dairy. They were married on April 8, 1946 in Independence, Kansas. To this union two sons were born, Robert Donald and Richard Stephen. Wilma preceded him in death on December 19, 2011. Don is survived by many loving family members including his two sons, Robert “Bobby” (Sandra “Sandy”) Dooley of Ponca City and Richard (Karen) Dooley of Cushing; his four grandsons, Rance Dooley of Stillwater, Ryan (Maureen) Dooley of Ponca City, Shaun (April) Dooley of Rogers, Arkansas, and Mark (Stephanie) Dooley of Broken Arrow; eight great grandchildren, Samantha Dooley of Ponca City, Desiree Dooley (Sean Johnson) of Odessa, Texas, Griffin, Rowan, Phoenix, and Hazel Dooley of Rogers, Arkansas, and Shelby and Ellah Dooley of Broken Arrow; and his great-great grandson Elijah Sean Johnson of Odessa, Texas; and numerous nephews and nieces, several who live in the Cushing area. Preceding Don in death include his wife of 65 years; his father and mother; six brothers, Robert, Virgil, Ova, Sherman, Earl Odell “Cotton”, and Clyde; and three sisters, Lillian Dooley Hanson, Winnie, and Ethel May. Graveside rites and burial will be at the Euchee Valley Memorial Park Cemetery on Thursday, October 17th at 2:00 p.m. with Terry Dennis officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at Palmer Marler Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Read More
