Alice’s Obituary Big Rapids – Alice Jane Anderson, 97, of Big Rapids, passed away Saturday, October 12, 2019, at Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital. She was born August 28, 1922, in her grandmother’s house in Clarkston, the daughter of Jess and Leda (Smith) Vliet. Alice Jane moved with her family to Big Rapids as a child, and graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1940. On June 20, 1941, she married August S. “Gus” Anderson, a marriage that lasted for 75 years until his death on April 14, 2016. For many years, Alice Jane worked for the Mecosta County Road Commission, and later in the Mecosta County Probation & Parole Office. In 1937, she joined the First United Methodist Church in Big Rapids, where she was a long-time active member. She formerly served as the president of the United Methodist Women, was a member of the Ruth Circle, sang in the choir, and helped with many funeral luncheons and special events. Alice Jane had a passion for genealogy, and was proud of having her ancestor Francis Cooke arrive in America aboard the Mayflower in 1620. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) and the Daisy Chain of the BPO Elks #974 in Big Rapids. Alice Jane loved her children and grandchildren unconditionally. She was a room mother for her children, assisted with the Girl Scouts, and in her retirement years she was a grandparent tutor at the local elementary schools. She loved doing and making things for her family, including ceramic Christmas trees and 17-piece Nativity sets, which she would give as wedding gifts. Cooking for family gatherings, singing, travelling, and playing cards and her piano gave her great joy. Alice Jane is survived by her children, Larry and Tish Anderson of Newaygo, Terry and Bev Anderson of Holt, and Susie and Virgil Cimala of Stevensville; grandchildren Kimberly and Scott Plzak, Rick and Tracy Anderson, Missy and John Clark, Brian and Holly Anderson, Tim and Angie Anderson, Taylor and Jen Cimala, Kaitlyn and Geof Coeling, Jay Cimala, and Zach Groendyke; great-grandchildren Chelsea (Stephen) Stockhaus, Laurel (Bryan) Reisdorf, Andrew Plzak, Alexandra (Kyle) Christensen, Chloe Clark, Claire, Avery, Marie, and Leya Anderson, and Eloise and Henry Cimala; a great-great-grandson Lucas Stockhaus; her sister Nancy Horan; her sister-in-law Ruth Vliet; and several nieces and nephews. Alice Jane was also preceded in death by her brother Jess Vliet and nephew Martin Bishop. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 17, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church in Big Rapids, with Pastor Devon Herrell officiating. Burial will follow in the Pine Plains Cemetery. Alice Jane’s family will greet friends from 4-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, and after 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at the church.
