Kevin McCurdy, Pastor officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home. SFC (Retired) Chester Thomas Surratt, age 94, Lawton, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2019 in Vernon, Texas. He was born June 1, 1925 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to Elzie and Katherine (Ruff) Surratt. He married Frances Nell Stephenson on September 7, 1945 in Wichita Falls, Texas. She preceded him in death on January 21, 2016. SFC Surratt served as a baker in the United States Army from March 8, 1944 until his retirement on April 30, 1064. He served in World War II and Korea. While serving his country he earned the following awards; American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Good Conduct Medal W/3 clasps, Korean Service Medal W/3 Bronze Service Stars, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal Bronze Clasp with 4 loops. Following retirement from the military, Chester worked with Earl Wright of Wright’s Donuts at the Herb’s Red Bud Bakery. He later worked with Earl Wright at the first Wright’s Donuts in Lawton on south 11th street. Chester changed career paths and began upholstering out of his garage across from Westwood Baptist Church around 1970. Chester learned how to upholster from his father who was an upholsterer. He later opened his own, big upholstery shop on west Lee Boulevard just west of Sheridan road followed by opening a furniture manufacturing plant on 2nd and Railroad. Chester later sold both of these businesses and moved back to upholstering out of his garage until the age of 88. He is survived by one son and his parent’s caretaker for the past several years, Kerry Surratt of the home, two step sons, Keith O. Plunkett and wife Dolly of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, Karlos Plunkett and wife Marty of Cache, four grandchildren, Keith Plunkett, Jr., Kim Crabtree, Kenny Plunkett and Kris Plunkett, seven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. His parents, wife, one grandchild, Kevin Plunkett, and one sister, Dorothy L. Reil preceded him in death. Memorial donations may be made to Kerry Surratt to help assist with funeral expenses at PO Box 217, Davidson, OK 73530.
