Carol McNeill Kirchheimer 2019

Carol McNeill Kirchheimer October 5, 1932 – September 9, 2019 Carol McNeill Kirchheimer, 86, died peacefully with family at her daughter’s home in Highland Park, IL on September 9, 2019, following a brief but difficult fight with cancer. Born in Brooklyn, NY on October 5, 1932, Carol was the daughter of Lillian Rabe McNeill and Dr. John F. McNeill, principal of Erasmus Hall High School and a veteran pilot who served in World Wars I and II. A graduate of Erasmus Hall and Cornell University, Carol majored in linguistics and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. She valued education greatly and excelled at languages, speaking Spanish, French and Russian in addition to her native Brooklynese. She met the love of her life, Ernest Kirchheimer, in 1960 at the Texas Butadiene and Chemical Corporation in New York, where she was a secretary and he was a manager and chemical engineer. A consummate New Yorker, Carol loved the city and its many cultural offerings. She and Ernest enjoyed attending Philharmonic concerts and Broadway shows, visiting museums and eating at restaurants from Chinatown to the Village and the Upper East Side. They also enjoyed traveling to the Caribbean, spending vacations with close friends and family in Maine, and taking special trips to Europe and Alaska. While too modest to call attention to her intellect, Carol was a closet trivia whiz who could quickly complete Sunday New York Times crossword puzzles that stumped other family members. Throughout her life she enjoyed playing bridge weekly with friends. Having navigated the subway to Coney Island frequently as a young girl, she knew the city’s public transportation system inside and out and was a great source for advice on the most efficient routes. She was a proud member of the Cornell Club and attended her 65th reunion in Ithaca in June. She and Ernest supported a number of charities and were members of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the New York Public Library. A homemaker and mother first, Carol enjoyed volunteering at the library of her daughter’s elementary school, Grace Church School, and rarely missed a high school swim meet or volleyball game, even after returning to work part-time as an executive assistant once her daughter was in high school. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, an aunt, Elizabeth Rabe, and her brother John F. McNeill. She is survived by Ernest, 94, her husband of 58 years, her daughter Barbara (Robert Kelsey), her beloved grandchildren Jason and Marina Polydoris, her sister-in-law Mary McNeill, and her nephews John and Jim McNeill and nieces Mary Anne Cramer and Marguerite Kirchheimer. Born: October 5, 1932 Death: September 9, 2019 A celebration of Carol’s life will take place in New York at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation or a charity of your choice. Info: 847-675-1990 or
