Phillip Allen Johnston, 82, a lifelong Morgan County resident, passed unexpectedly on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at Franciscan Saint Francis Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born on May 23, 1937 in Martinsville to the late Jack Junior and Virginia Lucille (Whitaker) Johnston. He graduated from Martinsville High School with the class of 1957. Shortly after school, he married Sara Rosalie Pack and together they had 6 children, 3 sons and 3 daughters. Rosalie passed on May 20, 1996. A hardworking family man, Mr. Johnston worked for Union Carbide which is now Praxair in Indianapolis for over 40 years. With a strong work ethic, he worked his way up from janitor to management and retired as head buyer in purchasing. Also, he had worked at Harmon Motive in Martinsville. He was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Martinsville. On September 5, 1998, he got a second chance at love and married a lady from his church, Bettie Gordon. The two have enjoyed over 20 years of marriage. A true outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and many other outdoor activities. He was very interested in Native American history and Westerns. He made jewelry, hunting bows, guns, and even his own ammunition. Above all, he loved the Lord and his family. Mr. Johnston leaves behind his loving family including his wife, Bettie Johnston of Martinsville; sons, Mike (wife, Renee) Johnston of Morgantown, Kentucky, and Patrick (wife, Tracey) Johnston of Gosport; daughters, Teresa (husband, Michael) Massey of Martinsville, Joy (husband, James) Klein of South Pointe, Ohio, and Sara Hill of Inverness, Florida; sister, Christine Platt of Indianapolis; and 24 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosalie Johnston; son, Gary Johnston; stepdaughters, Janet Walters and Elizabeth Gordon; and brother, Fred David. Family and friends are invited to visit on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm in the chapel at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center in Martinsville. A service celebrating the life of Phillip Johnston will begin at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at Neal & Summers with Rev. Linda Presley officiating. There will be an hour of visiting prior to the service. Following the service, he will be laid to rest alongside his late wife, Rosalie in New South Park Cemetery in Martinsville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Christian Church in Martinsville, 89 South Main Street, Martinsville. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
