Lisa Iskalis McCarthy April 5, 1967 – July 21, 2019 Lisa Iskalis McCarthy, age 52, of Northfield, Illinois, died on July 21st at Glenbrook Hospital after courageously fighting breast cancer for three and a half years. Born in Waukegan, Illinois, Lisa displayed an indomitable spirit from a young age. Walking at six months old, she was a spitfire who could not be stopped. Academically brilliant, Lisa graduated at the top of her class in both middle and high school, where she participated in high school basketball, tennis, volleyball, and cheerleading. Always one to hold herself to high standards, in 1988 she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Illinois. She majored in political science and French, a language in which she was fluent. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society and Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She earned a J.D. at NYU School of Law in 1992. In addition to excelling in the study of law, she enjoyed singing and acting in the law school musicals. However, the best part of her legal education came when clerking at Jenner & Block in Chicago after her second year of law school. It was there that she met Kevin McCarthy, who swept her off her feet, just as she did to him. She changed her plans to practice law in France, choosing to marry Kevin and build a life together in the Chicago area. In her legal career, she worked at Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal, the American Dental Association, and McCabe & Hogan. Lisa retired from her legal career to devote time to her family and her community. She volunteered at Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church and Lurie Children’s Hospital. She was also an avid tennis and paddle player and enjoyed the camaraderie of that community. Generous and kindhearted, she made delicious homemade dinners for other families and ministered to those in need. Whether urging her children to set and achieve high academic goals or organizing the next trip for her extended family, Lisa put her family at the center of her life. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother, sister, and aunt who made her home the warm and welcoming center of family activity. Even her children’s friends called it their “second home” and would find that she had stocked her pantry with all their favorite foods. As mastermind of family outings, she often displayed the remarkable sense of humor that made her such a vibrant force and a joy to be with. This might include supplying all eighteen family members with fake mustaches to put on between courses at a formal dinner in an elegant Born: April 5, 1967 Death: July 21, 2019 restaurant. As she told the brain surgeon before her operation, “I better come out as smart and funny as I am now.” And she did. Confident and assertive, she never backed down from standing up for what was right. Consequently, on her fortieth birthday (when her parents gave her the car they had promised her in high school), a man showed up at the door to announce the delivery, but Lisa thought she was being served a warrant in response to her feisty defense of principle the day before. There was no one quite like her. She stood tall – all five feet of her beautiful, fashionable, and loving self. Lisa is survived by her husband, Kevin McCarthy; her four children, Madison, Caroline, Quinn and Michael McCarthy; her parents, Thomas and Doris Iskalis; her brother John Iskalis and his wife, Dana; her sister Jennifer Marhefka and her husband Keith; her sister-in-law, Annalisa; and her mother- and father-in-law, Jerry and Joyce McCarthy; her numerous nieces and nephews that she treated as her own children. She was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Iskalis.
