Evelyn Ferne Matney 89 died Sunday, July 28, 2019 at Heritage Healthcare in Chanute. Evelyn was born on August 24, 1929 in Rural Wilson County east of Neodesha in the home her grandfather built, to Frank Montgomery and Josie (Pettit) Perkins. Evelyn was a graduate of Fredonia High School class of 1947. On August 30, 1956 she married Joe Matney. Evelyn and Joe were married for 42 years until Joe’s death of March 26, 1998. Evelyn spent most of her life working at the home and raising her family. She enjoyed cooking, bird watching, mushroom hunting, and going fishing at the Mill Dam. The family spent many hours fishing. Most of all, Evelyn loved taking care of her family and raising her grandchildren and they were the most important thing in her life. Evelyn is survived by: 3 Daughters: Connie Vale and husband Larry of Neodesha, KS Rita Cooper of Fredonia, KS Lisa McElroy and husband Hayden of Neodesha, KS 7 Grandchildren: Matthew Matney, Melonie Vest, Emily Vail, Audrey Sinn, Scott Vail, Allison McDonald and Dwight McElroy 14 Great Grandchildren and 4 Step Great Grandchildren and 5 Step Great-Great Grandchildren. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joe, sister Josephine Osborn and infant brother James Tru. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 2, 2019 at 10:00 AM at Countryside Funeral Home in Fredonia, with burial to follow at Star Cemetery east of Neodesha. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2019 from 5-7 PM at the funeral home. Memorials have been suggested to the Kansas Dept of Wildlife Bird Sanctuary and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home.
