Obituary Cynthia June Dunkel LaVelle-Pahl, 85, of Dalton, Georgia, died July 21, 2019 at her residence – Dalton Place Senior Living. She was preceded in death by her mother Katherine “Kitty” Dunkel Bledsoe and father, Harry Kumler Dunkel. She was especially fond of the late Cynthia Katherine English Parkinson – her grandmother – who she always referred to as Grammy P. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather Daniel Homer Parkinson, Sr. On her father’s side, both Katherine Mary Kumler Dunkel and Samuel Albert Dunkel preceded her in death. She was born April 17th, 1934 to Kitty and Harry Dunkel in Brookville, Ohio. She graduated from Brookville, High School in 1952 and married Gene LaVelle. They had three children, Brenda, Scot and Blair LaVelle. In 1971, Cynthia met and married Nicholas Pahl, a professor of Russian at Kent State University. There she cultivated her love of fine arts learning to weave, paint, and sculpture. Her pursuit led her to receive both a BFA and MFA from Kent State. From an early age, Cynthia studied both violin and piano. Her musical tastes were for opera with an especial fondness for The Irish Tenors and Thomas Hanson. She greatly enjoyed the cinema and theater too. Her lifelong quest of knowledge led her down the path of thousands upon thousands of books, magazines and other forms of literature. She belonged to several book clubs over the years and loved the people with whom she engaged. Her family knew her for her quirky sense of humor, for her appreciation for foods and deserts, and for her joy in doing puzzles and games. She cherished the beauty of nature and surrounded her yard with flowers and plants. She valued her children and their families along with the many relatives and others who befriended her over the years. The surviving trove of letters and (later) emails are a testament to each. She is survived by daughter Brenda LaVelle of Dalton, sons and daughters-in-law Scot and Christine LaVelle of Rocky Face; Blair and Belinda LaVelle of Tunnel Hill; grandchildren include Alex LaVelle of Marietta; Jonathon LaVelle and wife Aubrey LaVelle, great grandson Brooks of Tunnel Hill; Daniel LaVelle and wife Sydney LaVelle, great grandsons Ryan and Cooper of Tunnel Hill; Meridith LaVelle of Athens; Stephen LaVelle of Tunnel Hill; William LaVelle of Rocky Face; Zachary LaVelle of Athens; step-grandson and wife, Bart and Katherine Hill and family. The family is eternally grateful for all of her excellent caregivers and staff of Memory Care and the Tapestry Hospice. Prayers, words of encouragement and kind gestures are gratefully appreciated during this time of bereavement. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to The American Cancer Society or The Creative Arts Guild. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
