Richard “Dick” Maurice Cantrell April 02, 1936 – June 02, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Richard “Dick” Cantrell was born on April 2, 1936, to Maurice and Olive Ross Cantrell in Merna, Nebraska. He had three siblings: Larry Cantrell, Loretta Young, and Debbie Hawkes. His family moved to Idaho, where he attended school and became a champion track and field runner. He was an enthusiastic participant in the Scouting program, earning his Eagle Scout award. In November of 1954, he attended a sock hop at the local nursing school, where he met Shirley Wilson, who he said, “has been [his] special girl friend for 64 years.” They were married December 7, 1956 and had five children—Robin Castle (deceased), Beth Grant (David), Suzie Shepherdson (Bobby), Sondra Ellsworth (Bret), and Shannon Matheson (Mike). He was a skilled engineer whose work took him to Washington, South Texas, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia. He retired in 2000 and settled in Lehi, Utah. Dick was a positive presence in the lives of his 5 daughters and 15 grandchildren. Dick was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. After converting to the church at the age of 20, he took great joy in his gospel service and testimony. He served two service missions, was a bishop, a High Councilman, and a Seventy. He was proud to be a positive example of church membership throughout his travels. He loved going fly fishing, being outdoors, and traveling in his motor home. We will remember the mischievous twinkle in his eye and his playful sense of humor. If any of his grandchildren were upset, he would sing the Nat King Cole lyrics, “Smile though your heart is aching.” We know that he is looking down at us, reminding us to smile, even now, as our hearts our aching. Dick passed away on June 2, 2019 after a long battle with heart disease. He is survived by his wife Shirley, four daughters, 15 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren, and his brother, Larry. He is preceded in death by daughter Robin Castle, parents Olive and Maurice, and his sisters Loretta and Debbie. The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses in the ICU at American Fork Hospital for their kindness and understanding during Richard’s last days. Memorial services will be held on Friday, June 7, 2019, at 3:00 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints chapel located at 851 N. 1200 East in Lehi, Utah.
